• UEFA Womens CUP 25 R

    From Binder Dundat@dundat@mail.com to rec.sport.soccer on Sun Jul 6 11:27:31 2025

Ever since England won the last Euro, it seems the Womens game has
become popular over night in England, we will see if that changes in the
next week. England lost to France yesterday and face another tough
match vs the Dutch, in the Femme Fatale group of Death. Meanwhile
Portugal is nowhere near as good as Spain in Womens football.

If UEFA was rocking like CONCACAF, they would invite teams like USA and
    Kanada to play.

Very weird draw. Spain should face no serious opposition until the
semis, while Germany, Sweden, France, England and Netherlands will be slaughtering each other on the other side.

In the meanwhile, a very unimpressive Norway has qualified from group A, Switzerland-Finland will determine the other qualifier.

Yesterday's results: Spain steamrolled over Belgium, even while
conceding two goals, while Italy gave away a late equalizer to Portugal (thanks to some panicky catenaccio "defending" in the final
minutes...old habits never die) to prevent them from securing a spot in
the QFs with one match to spare. Now they will need to preserve a 6GD advantage over Portugal in the final match. Should be safe, but if Spain
    are in the mood...

    Today's matches:
    Germany-Denmark
    Sweden-Poland

Germany and Sweden should win and battle it out for first place in MD3.

They did, and they battled it out for first place today. Germany came
out all guns blazing, took an early lead and looked poised to score even
more. Then the German defense allowed Blackstenius to run undisturbed
for 40 yards before slotting it home with a nice diagonal shot. A few
minutes later, Holmberg put Sweden ahead after an insistent run. Then
left side of the German defense was caught wide open again twice in two minutes: the first time Rytting Kanerid wasted a 3v1 chance, but on the
second try she was able to force Wamser into a goalline clearance with
her hands. Red card, penalty, 3-1 Sweden and game over.

Hurtig added a fourth in a meaningless second half. So Sweden tops the
group and ends up in the non-Spain half of the draw.

In earlier matches, Italy held up its own quite well in the first half
against Spain, taking the lead and then creating a few decent chances,
while containing quite easily La Roja's threat. In the second, either
because of fatigue or because Spain turned it up a notch, it was no
contest. Full time 3-1, but enough for Italy to advance to the QFs. You
just have to give it to Spain, they have the upper hand over Italy in
    all sports these days.

Group A had the most drama, with Finland taking the lead through a 78th
minute penalty that would have surprisingly taken them to the QFs, and Switzerland equalizing in injury time.

Today the last round of Group D matches: England should go through by
beating Wales, while Netherlands needs to beat France by three clear
goals to advance. Even with Les Bleues's penchant for self-destruction,
    that seems too much.

    Likely QFs:

    Norway - Italy
    Sweden - England

    Spain-Switzerland
    France-Germany

Yes, the draw was a joke, but I'm not complaining if it means Italy gets
a 40%-ish percent chance of making the semis (it's actually a bit higher
than that according to the bookies, but bookies are known to be wrong sometimes)

Sweden eliminated the powerhouse US in the WC, they can definitely do
    the same to England.

England and Norway to the semi.

    Spain - Switzerland
    France - Germany

Spain and Germany to the semi.

Germany has looked very shaky at the back, with goalkeeper Ann-Katrin
Berger looking particularly dreadful, both in he distribution and in the
actual job of keeping shots outside of the net. I'll say France and
    Spain.

    So at HT
England no longer loves Women's Football 2 -0 England loves Womens
    football

If you listen to the BBC sports or football shows during the summer, the
only tournament being played is the Womens Euro, Nary a thought was
given to the TRUMP MSGA tournament in USA, not even when Chelsea won the thing! Not that I have any issues with that, but they really made no
attempt to even acknowledge it existed.

Meanwhile, according to the BBC, England have pretty much won the Women
EUro 25 and every day you could listen to a bunch of English Women (and
some men) who sound like a cross between Mr Lily White and victims of
Jack the Ripper going on about Womens football and how none of the
Swedish players wouold even make the English National team and what the
girls like to do on their day off and who their favourite Spice Girls
are and whatever else you wanna know about the English Womens NT.

So anyhow 2-0 behind at the half, but this is WOmens football and 2-0
means nothing, this could change easily in the 2nd half.

Those were...erm...not the best of penalties. By either side.
Interesting clash in the semifinal between England Loves Women's

If the BBC and Sky Sports News was a person's only access to
the world of sport you'd think women's football was the greatest
thing since the sliced loaf. They get so excited they almost wet

They could not pull it off.
Another late goal in this game gives Spain the win.

    So Spain v England final.

    FT: England-Italy-a 2-1
    -a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a Bonansea 33'
    -a-a-a-a Agyemang 90+6'
-a-a-a-a Kelly (rebound off a soft penalty) 117'

Football sucks big time. As much as in 2000 or 1990. Almost as much as
in 1983, even though I don't remember why.

Jule Brand, the German midfielder, seems a good player.

FT: Spain - England 1-1 (a.e.t., England win on penalties)

England had a few chances early on, but then Spain took the lead with
a well-worked move on the right that freed Ona Batlle on the
touchline, and her precise cross was powerfully headed in from close
range by Mariona Caldentey. After the goal, Spain only increased their territorial and possession dominance, without creating clear-cut
chances, though. It was more of the same at the beginning the
second-half, but a moment of miscommunication between the Spanish
forwards and midfielders (to press or not to press?) left Stanway in
acres of space in midfield, she played the ball wide to the dangerous
Chloe Kelly, also in acres of space, and her well placed cross was
headed home by Alessia Russo, a true center-forward's finish.

After that, it was roughly 70 more minutes of Spanish futility. Lots
of possession, few dangerous chances. England didn't have a single
shot after the goal, but they held on until penalties. Beth Meade
scored on her first attempt while slippin, and was forced to retake
the penalty (new rule following the Julian Alvarez controversy in this
year's Real vs Atletico Champions League shootout), which she missed.
But Spain's missed three of its four penalties, and Kelly buried
England's last penalty for the title.

There will be controversy in Spain surrounding coach Montse's decision
to take off Putellas before the end of normal time. Spain are clearly
a super-talented team, but, like the men's side, they need to learn
how to convert their dominance in terms of possession into chances and
goals. A well-organized defense can stifle them. They needed a moment
of magic by Bonmati to have the better of Germany in the semifinal. It
didn't happen in the final, so they go home empty-handed.

    - Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
    - What was Tom|- thinking taking off Putellas that early?
    - The thing about Spain is they always try to walk it in.

Disagree. The Lionesses were the only ones capable to actually come back against the Spanish ball-hoggers.

they English will hate mens international football until they win
somehting, and they love the womes football and that is good , but if
ever you mnetion it is not real football, you will be that guy, I mean me.

Wow, that is my drunk like response, which is doctorish.

I like womrsn football, buit it is not real. And yeah I am an old dinasour

Italy wuz robbed (we would have probably lost on PKs, but that 119th
minute penalty for a nothing challenge is an outrage!)
