There was a theater company in town that would rent out costumes for >Halloween.
When I was a kid, it was the usual off the rack costumes in plastic bags
at dollar stores and such, likely made of flammable material. Did have
a lot of fun trick-or-treating back then!

How so? No one is forcing you to buy candy or even to turn on the porch >>> light (if you're worried about people knocking to beg for treats).
You live in a gated community for older affluent
people. Your halloween decorations are just a look, for
show. I doubt your gate staff is going to admit gangs of
unknown kids and teenagers to pester at your door.
I don't live in a gated community. In the 25 years we've lived
here, we had precisely one trick-or-treater: the next-door
neighbor's kid.
Houses on this street are too far apart to make it worth their while.
We always keep exterior lights off at night and draw the drapes,
so Halloween isn't much different from a normal night.

Jenni is into that kind of stuff, but not me. We do take the kids out
trick or treat-ing. Our hilly neighborhood doesn't get any kids going
door to door.
Decor-wise, I do have a collection of small gourds that I put around.
I'm going to try to let them dry out, some people like to sand and paint them to use as decor. We really only decorate for Christmas.

We're into highs in the 60's now, and it's even getting down to the high
40's some nights. Not my time of year, Brrr!
At last, we're out of the 80s. It'll be 36 tonight. Time to
open the bedroom window. It's 62 right now and I came home to
find my husband had opened all the windows in the house. Yippee!
You probably like the season better, to get a break from the heat.

Jenni is into that kind of stuff, but not me.-a We do take the kids out
trick or treat-ing.-a Our hilly neighborhood doesn't get any kids going

Decor-wise, I do have a collection of small gourds that I put around.
I'm going to try to let them dry out, some people like to sand and
paint them to use as decor.-a We really only decorate for Christmas.

Yesterday I was fantasizing about a helicopter dropping water
every time someone lights a pile of leaves. My husband suggested
that would be appropriate for a first offense. After that, a
helicopter drop of Coleman fuel.

I used to like the smell of burning leaves in the fall. We can't do that
any more.

We're not supposed to, but people do anyway. One particularly
bold fellow does it in the ditch next to the road.
I think I'd have to call the fire department on them, and they've
got better things to do than improve my quality of life.

It's about 1o degrees cooler than that here and over the next few weeks
it should be in the 60s.-a We need rain. We usually get lots of it in September and October when we get the leftovers hurricanes in the US south.-a I had to buy a lot of water last week and was hoping for enough rain to replenish the ground water and the cistern.

Do you use the cistern for all of your water?-a My father finally hooked
up to city water last year.-a The hook up fee was first available for a
few hundred dollars in the early 90's, plus labor costs.-a He held out,
but when he finally hooked in, the fee to tap into the city water line

for the garden house outside.-a It's been very dry here, as well.-a I haven't even cut the grass in a month.
