IMHO lever fronts do shift better than any cable model.

Seems to me that there'd be some sort of a disadvantage to reaching
down to that lever while cranking to complete the shift. It would've
been for me being a bit on the awkward side.

Long ago, I purchased a few boxes of bicycle junk parts. Included was
a Simplex shifter-derailleur. I think it was a clamp on mount, not
braze on. I didn't have a reason or time to try it. When I moved out
of the Pomona area, I gave it to someone who claimed they could use
it.

I used down tube shifters for years and years with no problrms. While
I don't claim his level in skili Eddy Merckx was once asked if he
missed many shifts and he replied, "I havent missed a shift since I
was 5 years old".
