Free speech seems to be dying all over the West. Somehow, offending
people has been criminalized. Whatever happened to "Sticks and stones
may break my bones but words can never hurt me"?

And which "views" would those be, in your "view"?

Your whole "speech shouldn't be protected if the speaker's intent doesn't rest
with with the angels" schema.

Never said that or anything like it. Never even said "speech shouldn't
be protected (period)" ...like the law does for certain speech.

Sure you have. You've repeatedly said you'd be in favor of allowing punishment
for speech that's intended to harass or insult.

In other words, speech that's not so much "speech" as it is, e.g., a
stink bomb.
Yes, I quite disapprove (anyway) of actions masquerading as
"free speech", not least because they dilute protections of the latter.
Btw, since I suspect I'm alone here in having read what the priest
actually wrote, I'll offer my judgment that his words were indeed
entirely proper. I don't even get why one article called them "heated".

It *is* speech, your pejorative and subjective characterization of it notwithstanding, and it's certainly not a determination I want the government making when deciding whether I can be imprisoned for saying something they don't like.

It's 'speech' only as a judicial misnomer. E.g., a daily highway march crippling a city's economy is outright blackmail, regardless of the
slogans on marchers' t-shirts. Yet, for reasons I can only guess at,
courts have allowed such tactics as "speech". It's nonsense.
