• [OT] JK Rowling reacts to Vancouver disavowal of her

    "Woke" isn't dead yet, especially in Vancouver, as we can see in this
    article. (BC still has an NDP, i.e. Socialist, government. You'd have to
    ask Horny Goat the political slant of the Vancouver government.)

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/vancouver-park-board-harry-potter-forbidden-forest-event-apology-j-k-rowling-9.6934732

    I have to admit to being surprised that JK Rowling would get involved in
    this personally - I would have thought she was way too busy with other
    things - but I give her high points for putting these people in their
    place.

    About twenty years ago presumed immigration activists were invading
    peoples yards in Vancouver and girdling maple trees, which kills
    the trees. That this was tolerated by the Vancouver government
    shows you what their politics is.

    The CBC article lied about trans politics:

    Rowling has made public that she does not believe people can change
    their biological sex and that having individuals self-identify their
    gender could pose a threat to women and children who are not
    transgender.

    Can you believe this nonsense? I mean, what kind of wilting daisies are 'harmed' by a Harry Potter attraction?

    And then all the appalling stipulations that the government will be much more diligent in its censorship efforts in the future.

    THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED

    A. THAT the Vancouver Park Board hereby apologizes for the harms caused to transgender, gender diverse and Two-Spirit (TGD2S) people and their community by hosting of the Harry Potterrao event.

    FURTHER THAT the Vancouver Park Board

    i.Reiterates that it unequivocally supports the lives and rights of TGD2S people, it will continue to celebrate and honour them and their communities, and it will continue to support their specific needs and opportunities in the Vancouver parks and recreation system;

    ii. Recognizes that transphobia sets a precedent to the reduction in human rights that affects all of us;

    iii. Publicly disavows JK Rowling's political activity and recognizes the harm that it causes globally;

    iv. Directs the Chair to send a letter conveying the foregoing apology to appropriate members of the community.

    B. THAT the Vancouver Park Board directs staff to report back to confirm that the Harry Potterrao event will run for one season only, with no renewal or extension.

    C. THAT the Vancouver Park Board directs staff to separately report back on concrete actions the Park Board can take to repair trust and address the harm caused to TGD2S people and their communities by hosting the Harry Potterrao event, including:

    i. Actions to increase TGD2S inclusion and safety according to the renewed TGD2S Action Plan anticipated for Q1/2026;

    ii. Strengthened consultation processes to ensure events with equity or human rights implications are referred to the 2SLGBTQ+ Advisory Committee as early
    as possible in the planning process;

    iii. Expanding spaces, place-making and events to celebrate and honour TGD2S people and communities.

    D. The Vancouver Park Board directs staff in the business services group to,
    in the future, conduct deeper investigations into the reputational aspects of potential hosted events, and to present a fulsome account of such risks to Commissioners at the time approval is requested.

    i. Requests for confidential approval by potential suppliers shall be viewed with extreme skepticism going forward.

    Most of the Vancouver municipalities including the City of Vancouver
    itself are of various political stripes but firmly committed to the
    "Woke" agenda though don't allow it to go nearly as far as in
    California.

    What >IS< a big deal in British Columbia is that while the NDP has
    been in power provincially for several years, the present NDP premier
    is considerably further to the left of his NDP predecessor (who died
    recently of cancer) and has taken BC from a $5B surplus when he took
    power to an $8B deficit which is positively scary in a province with
    population just under 6 million.

    That's a swing of $13 billion in just 3 years - and a lot of that is
    pay raises to public sector workers who are claiming they failed to
    get sufficient raises during COVID and say it's time to "catch up".
    That and the flattening of the Vancouver real estate market.

    Which is why I'm grateful I don't live in the city of Vancouver (as
    opposed to one of the northern burbs). We're talking about a city of
    roughly 600,000 in the city of Vancouver vs 2.6 million in Metro.

    I never read Rowling's books (though my kids certainly did) and while
    my daughter last night told me Rowling "had gone crazy" I've watched
    enough videos to admire her a lot more than 20 years ago.

    For all definitions of "crazy" equal to refusing to go along with the
    absurdity that a man can become a woman just by putting on a dress and wishing hard enough, and that further, he should then be allowed to compete in women's sports, use women's private spaces (locker rooms, dressing rooms, bathrooms, abuse shelters, etc.), and that if arrested, should be sent to a women's prison.

    If refusing to accept that load of nonsense qualifies one as crazy, then I guess I'm a lunatic right along with Rowling.

    Please accept my apologies for your current premier, David Eby. He's
    actually from this area of Ontario so I feel vaguely responsible
    somehow, although I'd never heard of him before he was elected in BC.
    (If he was ever a politician here, it was probably in a minor post
    otherwise I'd probably have recognized his name.)

    I don't pretend to understand BC politics. When I was younger, you had a
    lot of Social Credit governments, even though the social credit movement hasn't really been big since the 1930s. Then you alternated between the
    NDP and the BC Liberals, although I've heard it said many times that the
    BC Liberal Party is much more conservative than the federal Liberal
    Party. But a couple of elections ago, the BC Liberals self-destructed or
    ran out of gas and the long moribund BC Conservative Party came roaring
    back and only narrowly failed to form a government. I was really hoping
    Eby would lose the last election but he hung on by a whisker. Hopefully, you'll turf him next time although I was getting some "not ready for
    prime time" vibes from the pundits about the reborn BC Conservatives.
