• More trouble with Thunderbird/Eternal September today

    From rhino@user3015@newsgrouper.org.invalid to rec.arts.tv on Fri Aug 29 20:35:10 2025
    From Newsgroup: rec.arts.tv

Thunderbird and Eternal September have been working fine for me for weeks now but today, they suddenly went squirrelly again. I tried to click on posts in this newsgroup and got messages about the post having expired even though it was new yesterday.

I did what I normally do when this happens - this is not the first time in recent months that I've had trouble - and unsubscribed/resubscribed to this newsgroup, only to find that there are no threads in this newsgroup at all. This is far from the first time that this has happened either.

Then I came to Newsgrouper and started this post to see if anyone could advise me what was wrong today.

And then I remembered what had ultimately saved the day the last time this nonsense happened, which kept me off Usenet for a couple of days: I closed and re-opened Thunderbird.

PROBLEM SOLVED: I was able to get a list of threads and posts for this newsgroup and read posts. I assume I'll have no trouble posting when I want to.

I'm delighted that I've got a simple, reliable way to fix this problem but I'm baffled by what the actual problem is. How can I prevent this from happening again? Given that closing and re-opening Thunderbird solves the problem, I'm strongly inclined to think Tbird is why it happens, notwithstanding all the trouble Anim had the past few days with EasyNews/Eternal September.
I know I'm not the only Thunderbird user here; do any of the rest of you have these problems too and resolve them the same way?

I've had no trouble for months.

I'm a TB user on E-S. I never have this problem but then I don't leave
TB up and running. I start it up, read the news groups and then shut TB
down. Why leave it open if I'm not reading stuff on it?

I may have to adopt your strategy after I finally replace this aging

Sounds like it is booting off a hard drive. You would be surprised at
how much of a speed boost you can get from just booting off a SATA SSD
or a NVME SSD. I added a SATA SSD to my old PC some years back and it
more than halved the boot time off the 7200RPM HD. Plus they are so
cheap now it's easy to get one.

SSD's were just starting to come into use when I bought this laptop

Yes, that's what Windows keeps telling me :-)

I definitely want a new computer but I'm hearing that Windows 11 is not
very good. Macs are crazy expensive or I might go that way. I've toyed
with going Linux but I'm told that it won't run a lot of the developer

Sounds like it is booting off a hard drive. You would be surprised at
how much of a speed boost you can get from just booting off a SATA SSD >>>> or a NVME SSD. I added a SATA SSD to my old PC some years back and it
more than halved the boot time off the 7200RPM HD. Plus they are so
cheap now it's easy to get one.

SSD's were just starting to come into use when I bought this laptop
(which does NOT have an SSD); now I doubt you can get a new laptop
WITHOUT an SSD (well, maybe with a special order).... Every set of specs >>> I see for new computers has an SSD. Clearly, my boot times should be a
lot better on the next computer.

I assume you're running Windows? Might be a good time to upgrade your
computer since Microsoft stops supporting windows 10 in October.

Yes, that's what Windows keeps telling me :-)

I definitely want a new computer but I'm hearing that Windows 11 is not
very good. Macs are crazy expensive or I might go that way.

Nah, you can find some very reasonable deals on used ones on eBay or
other online dealers. The only Mac I've paid more than $300 for was my
first one in 1991 before the rise of the internet.

Now they probably won't have the "latest and greatest" system installed
mind you but you won't be waiting an hour (or half hour) to boot up --
just a few minutes. And if you "sleep" them like I normally do,
    immediately.

Obviously I'm using an old Unix client from the command shell in a
    terminal emulation and not Thunderbird.

But in future, I would advise you that exiting the application, then
restarting it, would be the first step. Unsubscribe/resubscribe
addresses a messed-up history of read/unread articles and whether the
user should force a download of articles selected for reading, As this
is time consuming, never try this is a first step.

Clearly, when you were reviewing the group's index after NEWSOVERVIEW
was performed (header download), internal links to the already
downloaded articles were missing and needed to be recreated. Since the
articles themselves weren't messed up, unsubscribe/resubscribe should
not have been the first step to try. It sounds like a missing symbolic
link, something that may be created internally to Thunderbird when it
    starts up.

I may have to adopt your strategy after I finally replace this aging
laptop. it's pushing 10 years old and opening apps has been painfully
slow for the past couple of years so I basically leave everything open
all the time to avoid the delays of having to wait for things to open. >(Reboots of the whole computer literally take an HOUR counting the time
it takes to open the handful of things I use most.)

And this is why I despise Thunderbird.

D.T.'s character set is ASCII, marked as 7-bit transfer encoding (which
means no encoding) in his MIME header. But he uses two spaces after a
period ending his sentences, undoubtably the way he was taught in typing
    class in junior high school.

Because Thunderbird and Firefox share code base, and browsers are
required to treat and display a string of whitespace characters as a
single space, Web pages must use the non-text character nonbreaking
space to force display of a double space.

Thunderbird, in turn, changes a quoted double space to nonbreaking space
and whitespace, turning what should otherwise be plain text ASCII into
    what is not plain text.

I've seen other Thunderbird users introduce nonbreaking spaces into
quotes of what had been plain text, but this is the first time I spotted
    the trigger.

I suspect if D.T. used UTF-8, then his use of double space would too get
    the nonbreaking space-whitespace substitution.

I only tried the unsubscribe/subscribe AFTER the posts I clicked on were
"not found" so I'm still baffled by why they failed to appear when
everything had been fine the day before and I had not done anything in between, like updating Tbird or rebooting the computer. That - and
Anim's issues of the previous day - made me suspect Eternal September as
    being the culprit.

The obvious lesson in all this is to close/open Tbird FIRST if things
start misbehaving in Usenet so that will be my practice going forward.
I've already tried finding substitutes for Tbird and been sorely
disappointed with the one exception of Newsgrouper which isn't ideal due
to the goofy way it handles text-wrapping but is otherwise satisfactory.

I've had used computers that were up to 17 years old. However, the hard

I may have to adopt your strategy after I finally replace this aging
laptop. it's pushing 10 years old and opening apps has been painfully
slow for the past couple of years so I basically leave everything open
all the time to avoid the delays of having to wait for things to open.

That's certainly possible, but putting in a SATA SSD is going to make
a big difference in his boot times. It may not solve all the problems
but it would certainly help. As we are all saying there's no reason
even an old lap top should be extremely slow at booting (at least not
    an hours long boot time.)

Another issue could be a lack of memory depending on how much he has
and what is loading at boot.
