• Ping Adam - re: EasyNews

    From Ian J. Ball@ijball@mac.invalid to rec.arts.tv on Thu Aug 28 10:12:06 2025

    Adam,

So I've been communicating with Anim.

I think EasyNews needs to restart their server - Anim's last post to RAT
that we can see is from Aug. 20, but he's saying he's been posting the
whole time since then. That probably means that his posts are getting to
the EasyNews server, but they aren't being propagated from EasyNews.

Do you know anyone over at EasyNews you can contact to see if they can
make sure their server is fine and doesn't need to be restarted so
    messages start propagating again?

    Danke.

I've had no correspondence with them, sorry,

The best way to handle this is posting to eternal-september.support
since a number of News administrators read it and follow issues raised
    in it.

It would help greatly if anim gave you a list of Message-IDs after
August 20 and then we could figure out why they aren't propogating. It
doesn't have to be a complete list. I'd post the list to that newsgroup.

Either you or he could send me something in email.

If they show up on Usenet elsewhere, then we know that Easynews is still peering. A peer beteen news.eternal-september.org and Easynews may be down,
    if they don't peer directly.

It would help greatly if anim gave you a list of Message-IDs after
August 20 and then we could figure out why they aren't propogating. It doesn't have to be a complete list. I'd post the list to that newsgroup.

Either you or he could send me something in email.

If they show up on Usenet elsewhere, then we know that Easynews is still peering. A peer beteen news.eternal-september.org and Easynews may be down, if they don't peer directly.

Anim also sent me the header to his first post to the "Ping Anim" thread:

    Adam,

So I've been communicating with Anim.

I think EasyNews needs to restart their server - Anim's last post to RAT that we can see is from Aug.

    Danke.

I'm glad to see that Anim is still well and his silence is due only to technical difficulties.

I see the stuff you sent. Not sure what I understand from the logs, but
that Message-ID in the other followup should be helpful.

    I'll work on this later.

In the meantime if anyone else is an Easynews user, let us know if you
see any of his articles subsequent to the 20th and post a followup. That
would make it obvious that it's missing from eternal-september,

Also, suzeeq uses solani (which I've never been able to create an
account on) and can tell us if they received those articles after the
    20th.

Okay, this test shows that Easynews is working. I just posted through
Easynews and retrieved the message from Eternal-September. So I don't
know why Anim's posts aren't making it out into the world but it
doesn't seem to be a problem in Easynews. At least not one that I can
    see.

Okay, this test shows that Easynews is working. I just posted through Easynews and retrieved the message from Eternal-September. So I don't
know why Anim's posts aren't making it out into the world but it
doesn't seem to be a problem in Easynews. At least not one that I can

I'll let him know. He's using NewsTap (for iOS) which could be the

The only thing that stood out to me while glancing through his logs
was that he is using some special characters in different parts of the
header like the date. That may be fine, but it stood out as odd to
have special character after the date.

Like Ian I have no experience with Newstap so no idea what might

The best way to handle this is posting to eternal-september.support

It would help greatly if anim gave you a list of Message-IDs after

Those are the only two I could find since August 20th.

I have a trouble ticket in with easy news. Maybe they fixed it.

    I'll work on this later.

In the meantime if anyone else is an Easynews user, let us know if you
see any of his articles subsequent to the 20th and post a followup. That >would make it obvious that it's missing from eternal-september,

Also, suzeeq uses solani (which I've never been able to create an
account on) and can tell us if they received those articles after the
    20th.

Wish I had been home when you posted that (I was 2500 miles away
celebrating a family birthday) as I AM an EasyNews user and had
    wondered.

    NewsTap Log

I read through the log. The Message-IDs are articles that he read. When
it said that Easynews accepted an article, NewsTap didn't have its
Message-ID as that's created at the server and there's nothing for the newsreader to log. I don't find anything in here to log.

Here, the log notes a number of successfully posted articles but,
again, NewsTap has not been told what Message-IDs were assigned by the
    server.

The point is that NewsTap logged that the articles were injected, not
    rejected.

have special character after the date.

I saw that. The special character was a non-breaking space that some applications use to keep portions of the date or time stamp on the
same line. That's not a proto article header being logged.

In the logged entry of the Date header, it's in standard syntax.

I posted them in an article in eternal-september.support which is read

I'm glad it's working for him now but I'm confused as to what happened.
How did Ubi see the one article, but H.G. (an Easynews user) saw none of

    Sigh.

I apologize. I should have spotted the issue immediately when I looked
    at those Message-IDs. On Usenet, Message-ID uniqueness is critical;
syntax must be followed. If the newsreader hasn't assigned Message-ID in
the proto article, then the News server must assign it in order to
    inject the article.

Since the right part of the Message-ID was news.easynews.com, I assumed incorrectly that the News server had assigned the left part as well. It
turns out it was set in the newsreader and there was a misconfiguration,

The left part of the Message-ID MUST NOT end in
a ".". In the four I found, the left part was ending in a period.

Easynews should have rejected those and provided an explicit error
message to explain the problem. Instead, it injected the articles. Most
News servers they peered with rejected the articles for nonstandard
Message-ID syntax but obviously a handful allowed nonstandard Message-ID syntax.

After missing information was put in his newsreader, his articles had
    standard Message-IDs, like this one.

    Message-ID:
    <55513148.778157450.297615.anim8rfsk-cox.net@news.easynews.com>

As I explained in the other followup, that Message-ID is in bad syntax.
The left part ends in a ".". Most servers enforce Message-ID syntax. In
his case, Easynews created the right part only. The left part was
created by his newsreader. As there was a missing setting, the left part
    wasn't completed.

That should have been rejected by Easynews with an explicit error
    message instead of injecting it.
