• UK teacher in trouble

I'm probably the only one who watches Unforgotten, from ITV seen in the
United States on PBS Masterpiece Mystery. It's now series 6, six
episodes. It uses locations all over the place for its fictional
setting. A cold case homicide squad with seemingly unlimited resources is featured, but they are a framing device to tell the stories of those who
had interacted with the victim and whose actions led to the killing.

One of the suspects is played by Victoria Hamilton who typically plays a
woman with some sort of authority, not always entirely ethical. She was
one of the stars of COBRA, series 2 of Deep State, and recurring in
season 3 of His Dark Materials. The actress has got to be the daughter
of Peter Graves, given the shock of premature white hair.

She's a teacher at a girls' school. She got a complaint from a
female student that the books she had assigned were too white and too patriarchal. Incorrectly assuming that the girl was truly interested in
being exposed to other voices from authors writing memoirs who weren't
white men, she gave the girl two books from her own collection to read.

One of them was written by a black woman who had been discriminated
against. She used a certain word in the book title that gets censored to
shock (and to get the book purchased).

She's called into her headmaster's office to resolve the complaint filed
from the girl, who was most upset having been exposed to the word
without first having been warned. The girl hadn't read either book.

The headmaster wants her to apologize, and she's willing to say to the
girl that she's sorry for the upset the girl felt for not having been
warned before being exposed to that word. But the headmaster then
informs her that the union (It's not clear to me what union it is nor
why they are involved) had demnded that she take lessons in remediating micro-aggressions.

She loses it. She's not sure if what she's about to say is a micro or macro-aggression, but the union can go fuck itself.

Surely this is based on dozens of incidents that had gotten some news
    coverage.

What is the world coming to when a student will get a teacher into
serious trouble over not getting a trigger warning about a book title?
What happens when this snowflake enters a library or a bookstore?

It *has* to be the teachers union. What other union could conceivably be involved?

    Amen to that!

This has got to be yet another example of woke nonsense since it doesn't remotely make sense.

I keep seeing guests and/or hosts on videos from the UK saying people
are just about as fed up as they can be with this nonsense and
predicting some sort of explosion as a result of "woke", particularly
the massive influx of migrants claiming asylum which is accepted without question by the government. Naturally, the idea that of saying no to any
of these migrants is unthinkable to the government ministers and
bureaucrats because that would be racist or sexist or transphobic or Islamaphobic.

One other thought. Can we all agree that any student who loses her mind
over a word in a book title has been utterly and even maliciously failed
by her school? Surely school should imbue students with *some*
resilience so they aren't shattered by a single word or idea!

Yet that seems to be exactly the case and it's clearly deliberate on the
part of the teachers and administration. They pander to the idea that
every human being is so sensitive and so fragile that they can't be
exposed to anything that challenges the students existing views or
culture for fear of breaking them.

    This nonsense HAS to stop.

I apologize for leaving out the punch line. The girl claimed she was traumatized by seeing the word unprepared. The teacher pointed out that

Exactly. I refuse to believe that any child could genuinely be that traumatized by seeing a word.

Fair enough. I'm not sure if the teachers at *all* schools are unionized
or only those at council schools.

Union of forced re-education teachers drumming up business?

That would be an honest name so they'd never use that ;-)

You're exactly right. We need to do something different here. We have
our Charter of Rights and Freedoms already but between the government
and the activist judges, everything is being re-interpreted to strip
away our rights. I'm hearing more and more talk of electing judges here although I'm not sure anyone has thought through the implications of
electing Supreme Court justices. A change of attitude on the part of the government - i.e. replacing our hopelessly "progressive" Liberals with
the Conservatives - might be enough to get some more sensible people on
    the Supreme Court.
