To clarify, I've skipped bits but I'm pretty
sure that Florence is entirely biological,
as humans are, but - as described - she has
intelligence comparable to humans, and also
she has some characteristics literally designed
to protect humans that she has dealings with.
She's described as "AI" because she's an
intelligent artificial being, in the sense
or being a genetically altered wolf, and
because there are laws about that in this
setting so she isn't "just" an animal.
Whether she can do some things legally that
a human person can is undetermined - she and
her hunan boyfriend have just decided to marry.

I've read the strip in batches, every couple of years.
I don't think Florence is 100% biological: the strip
once introduced a remote control device that could,
at very least, shut her down.

Winston was a designer baby, given traits that suited him
for space. Unfortunatly, he turned out to be afraid of
space and can fly only if put into cold sleep before
takeoff.
He became a veteranarian and an expert on parasites. He and
Florence met when she staggered into his office bleeding
profusely.
