Actually, this is what the US tried to do, by maintaining diplomatic
relations with Nazi Germany right up until the last minute.

FDR and Churchill conspired (with Sir William Stephenson, aka secret
agent rCLIntrepidrCY, as go-between) to bring the US into the war on the
side of the UK, against the wishes of Congress. If they hadnrCOt
succeeded, how do you think things would have turned out?

This is what makes Trump's phony crusade against "antisemitism" on
university campuses so laughable. The American far right has
*always* been virulently antisemitic, and they're no different from
the antisemite of 1940 who wanted us either to stay out of the war
or to enter it in support of the Nazis.

So what exactly puts them (or at least a large faction of them) so
uncritically and unconditionally on the side of Israel and the
atrocities it is committing? Is it unacknowledged guilt about the fact
that they still hate Jews? Is it some aspect of Christian ideology
about the founding of the state of Israel being part of the advent of
    the rCLend timesrCY?

Maybe both. Both reasons are equally nuts. And these nuts are a danger
    to the world.

It's absolutely the second. The American far right is infested with "evangelicals" who hope to hasten the arrival of "end times."

There was no reason not to maintain relations
as that was a nice intel pipeline.

We DID come in the UK's side. What the heck do you
think Leand Lease was??? (and on a related note,
look at FDR's "planes planes and more planes" speech)

AND, Churchill did not become PM until May 1940. Now, when
    did the war start, erm?

The USA never chose to start a war with Germany. Nor USSR. Nor Japan.
The USA was sort of neutral.

It was Japan that first declared war against the USA. That is when we reciprocate and joined the war with Japan. We remained officially
    neutral against Germany.

The USSR remained neutral with the USA. Germany decided to declare war
against the USA. That was when Germany declared war on the USA, and we reciprocated. The USSR remained neutral with the USA.

As neutrals we could sell goods to belligerents as we saw fit. We can
defend shipping in international waters against all hazards.
