if you're open to textual readers (eg. slrn) you can run a newsreader in >>>> a term app for android. with modern large screens that's an option, and >>>> you'd have a fully functional software.

Adding value (I hope) to that slrn/tin/rn suggestion, is that Android has >>> always been able to run any Linux distribution (including desktops).

This is all for free. And the Android phone does not need to be rooted.

If the OP does go for a nix-related newsreader on Android, all I ask is

    Termux it's easier and it's at F-Droid.

Also, giving how implementing NNTP it's easier than email at least,
IDK how they didn't adapt a client for Android since long ago.

    There's no money in it.

Emacs has GNUs, but it's a bit hard to use.

You can get it from https://f-droid.org

Going down the f-droid rabbit hole, there use to be a dedicated client app called HotdogEd which supported both FTN(binkd) and USENET(nntp).

It still exists out on play store and f-droid but hasn't seen an update in a few years. Good software though. There is open source forks on https://github.com/Reveritus/HotdogEd and the NNTP provider lives on in the internet archive:

I tried it a year or two back. It did work on this Android 13
tablet, but there was a problem with the NNTP provider not
backgrounding properly. I forget the details: I did describe
    them, probably in this NG.

    hmm...

    (using Tor Browser 13.5.7)

    App Deleted or Gone
This app is no longer available on this server and there is no forwarding >>>address.
    ...

The app might be gone from that particular server, but it is available somewhere since I regularly see people on Usenet using it.

Alfio has just reposted links to the latest of his modded versions
    of PiaoHong.Usenet.Client v2.02 on it.tlc.cellulari.android. It
hasn't changed. I'll just quote his post:

    L'ultima versione |? la M17.
    |e stata fatta in 2 varianti:
Modded Colors: https://mega.nz/file/CIhiFKDT#H4FvPyZ_SIWKitPvaUxjKstjNmgPJhyMqwZxI4VkWVE Original Colors: https://mega.nz/file/uYJSwBJD#3Ya4p0HpSczyt95c_MnXjyBXYqP5J_Phkz0gZ9RbkCI

I use Original Colors* on an Android 13 tablet. Modded colors was
aimed at phones - I forget what the differences are.
