    You knew it would happen.

Windows 11 is a smartphone OS and makes working harder.

The MS team that reworked the UI has never done real work in a real
    working environment.

Working with Windows 11 in the real world is more difficult and takes more movements / clicks.

Why is Microsoft so stupid sometimes?

Huh? Microsoft wishes they had a smartphone OS. Windows 11 is
nowhere even close to a mobile OS. The software running on it could not
run on a phone. The work done using Windows 11 could not be done on a
    tiny phone screen.

Have you ever actually used Windows?

BTW, nothing is going to happen in 3 days. This is the biggest hype
since Y2K. The world will be just fine. Businesses moved to Windows
11 years ago. Home users don't care or have moved on to phones/iPads/Macs/Linux/whatever.

Not terrible advice, really, Mint is a great thing for first-time users

device, I booted one on this thing and it was great. But I cling to

The UI is kind of annoying now. You get used to it after a while but it
just doesn't doesn't respond the same way it has historically, which
makes it inefficient IMO. Overall organization isn't bad, but it's
    quirky.

My keyboard on my 2YO Dell laptop quit working after W11 upgrade. Can't
type anything after it boots so can't enter password to log in. The
only way the keyboard works now is to either tap some keys when the W11
circle is loading, or hit F12 and select the boot device, then it works
fine through reboots until it's powered off. BIOS is up to date, uses
the default PS2 keyboard driver. Shrug, it's Windows.

macOS is free to upgrade, the original cost of the OS being part of the

Third party software is usually very reasonably priced if not shareware

For me macOS is well worth it... which is NOT to say that others should not do as they wish. One HUGE benefit of desktop Linux is you can have it for free
(of course with paying for the hardware). But you the cost of entry is CERTAINLY a lot cheaper than macOS. Massively cheaper.

This implies a level of skills the users don't have.

That's one of the reasons it can't be the Year Of
The Linux Desktop. If only you could get a Linux Mint USB Stick
into the candidates hands, it might work.

Even if you staged Linux Mint sticks at the public library,
just the number of days on average it would take the
users to return the stick, would limit the utility. The
wait at my Public Library, for the only Hollywood DVD
they've got ("The Godfather"), the wait list for the DVD
is two years. And this is a movie that came out when ?
And has been played on broadcast TV how many times ?
But it does serve as a cautionary tale, that even
the best laid plan, would be thwarted by rate limitations.
Every aspect of the Year Of The Linux Desktop, is rate limited.

This is how you get Linux on a Windows PC. "Wubi"

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wubi_%28software%29

"The project's aim was to enable existing Windows users, unacquainted with Linux,
to try Ubuntu without risking any data loss (due to disk formatting or
partitioning mistakes).[3] It could also safely uninstall Ubuntu
    from within Windows.

It is not a Linux distribution of its own, but rather an installer for Ubuntu"

Do you mean Chrome OS? That has high usage -- though is not what people think of when they speak of Desktop Linux (GNU/Linux). But this is a strength of the Linux kernel -- it is used in many ways and many different systems.

Now, see ? That person is an example of someone who should
win the Nobel Peace Prize. A seminar at the library. Hmmm.
I'm trying to imagine what that would be like at our library.
My local library, I don't know if any of the rooms are big enough.

For an audience like that, if you had some scheme to acquire
USB sticks, the audience could run in Live mode and not bother
with the install step at first.

You want to be able to give instructions, that don't endanger
    someones data.

Some machines are a challenge to get them booting off USB.
Others can be easier. My Dell Optiplex 780 refurb, just
about anything you do on there has pitfalls. But then, the
audience is unlikely to be running something that bad.

    You knew it would happen.

That you would make another stupid post?-a-a Yes, we all knew that.
Windows 11 is a smartphone OS and makes working harder.

Huh?-a-a Microsoft wishes they had a smartphone OS.-a-a Windows 11 is nowhere even close to a mobile OS.

Didn't MicroSoft produce a "smartphone" some time ago??

Oh!! Look! They're still out and about ....

Yes, they HAD one. It was a spectacular failure. Then MS tried
Android. That was an even bigger failure.

Microsoft does not know shit about the mobile market.

They suck even worse now than they did 10 years ago.
The point remains. Windows 11 is NOT a mobile OS. MS has no mobile
OS. And they wish they had one now.

If theyrCOd left Nokia alone, it might have succeeded. Remember, it was
after Microsoft man Stephen Elop took over at Nokia that it went all-in on Windows Phone, and started its descent into the verge of extinction.

Nokia was on the verge of giving up and embracing Android, when Microsoft acquired it, on the flimsy excuse of a highly dubious business case. The
real reason, of course, was as a (vastly expensive) corporate face-saving measure, to try to blunt the PR impact of such a high-profile defection to GooglerCOs platform.

One irony was that Nokia had one all-too-brief success during the whole
saga, with its N9. This was based on a Linux kernel, like Android, but was
I understand it was structured more akin to desktop Linux in its openness. Elop came on board to late to kill the N9 project, but was able to ensure
it was a one-off, with no follow-on successors.

So the phone was released, to very limited markets. It got rave reviews,
sold out, and that was the end of it.

Microsoft does not know shit about the mobile market.

Remember, they dominated it at one time, with rCLWindows MobilerCY products back in the era of the rCLPDArCY, or rCLPersonal Digital AssistantrCY. They even
killed off an innovative rival, Palm, just through sheer marketing power,
not by actual superiority of product.

Somehow things changed a decade or so later, and Android (with GooglerCOs help) was able to come in and completely upset the apple cart (so to
    speak).

The point remains. Windows 11 is NOT a mobile OS. MS has no mobile
OS. And they wish they had one now.

They have tried to adapt Windows to many different uses outside the
desktop. None have succeeded -- thanks to Linux.

Even handheld gaming, running actual Windows games, is being dominated by Linux.
