GNOME3 is weird, to me, but it might be functional to others, that's
what makes Linux great in this respect, you have vast choices, I like
Cinnamon which is alike to Windows 7's environment, but everyone gets to choose, why is that bad?

I have been using xfm and fvwm with 9 virtual desktops since ? before year 2000

A third desktop has alsamixer, a forth and fifth some music I am studying / playing. etc.

I use 3 or four desktops when writing code, one for documentation,
one for the source code and one to test the compiled code I am writing.
ctrl cursor selects a desktop.

Faster is not possibbe.
And that all on all systems, X86 big PCs, Raspberries, like this one now.

But then I've read many 'merricans can no longer read and write,
so for those a terminal and bash (I use zsh as shell, that saves typing) may not be an option ;-)
My text editor is 'joe', always had been.

Almost all systems are on a UPS andconnected via a LAN, 3 Radpberries on 24/7. All wired, no WiFi.
PCs only on when needed, usually when I need to play a CD or DVD or M-Disc.
