• Gboard emoji-opener next to spacebar

When typing a message, I tend to fat-finger the spacebar at least
once, and hit the little emoji icon at the left of the spacebar. Why
is that even there, since there's also one in the rectangle where the
message I'm typing appears? At least that one is separated from where
I actually type, so I don't hit it by accident.

Is there some way to get rid of the emoji-panel-opening icon at the
left of the spacebar? I looked in Gboard settings, but couldn't find
    anything.
