I think the end of usenet started with the arrival of social media..
    facebook, insta, skype...

I recently had issues with thunderbird and/or Astraweb, and after 30
years i was thinking is it worth while sorting out? I load up
Thunderbird maybe once a week.. more often than not, there's nothing of
    value to read...

Of course not, it's still got Ausics, Eternal September, Paganini,
Solani, BlueWorld Hosting, NNTP4.net, Agency BBS, the new Pugleaf
thing if that actually works, and plenty more for free. Then there
are the paid ones like Giganews and Astraweb for those who really
feel the need to give their money away.

You have 2 years to decide on alternatives, no need to rush these things.
While yourCOre at it, you also have ample time to reflect on the usefulness
    of Usenet.

Lots of those. One day I want to get around to building software
to mirror posts from common web forum platforms via NNTP. Using
them via web browsers is just intollerable. Although at least
Discourse forums can have a mailing list mode that's more usable,
except that their way of selecting which sub-forums to get mail

Well I'm posting from Ausics, so that's the only vote that counts
from me. I believe BlueWorld Hosting has a lot more old posts than
most servers. Ausics and Paganini don't require setting up an
account to post. It's down to your own preferences really.

    Ausics - https://newsgroups.ausics.net/
    news://news.ausics.net
    BlueWorld Hosting - http://www.blueworldhosting.com
    news://news.blueworldhosting.com
    Paganini - news://paganini.bofh.team (no website)

Since other servers come and go as well I'd suggest leaving it
until closer to the Individual.net shut-down before comparing
alternatives very closely. Your chosen replacement server might
    turn out to die first.

Depends on how you define better. Usenet has always
been hopeless as far as the percentage of society involved

For what it's worth, from memory, i joined Astraweb after Netspace
pulled their news server in 2005? I think I've paid au$30.00 in the 20
years i've been with them, so $3.00 a year is hardly a major impost, and
it appears i have 183gb of data to download, so i'd suggest that will
    see me out! :-D
Currently using eternal sept, but it doesnt have the retention or the
binaries that Astraweb have. I may, or may not, get around to setting
Astraweb up again one day... I'd need to be pretty bored tho.

    I have to disagree.
The Usenet at least holds some of those selfproclaimt IT-Specialists (mainly from the MS-camp) back.

And as far as I can see there are no exactable alternatives around.
