• Android auto and Apple Carplay

Had my ranger for 4.5 years. been flawless, except for shit tyres. Lots
of tech, possibly too much. Had a lot of the "features" like smart
charging, occupant alarms, door open alarms, stop start turned off.

Ford's sync 3 was/is just a waste of time to me.

One thing i did use a bit, and have sort of dropped off, was Android
Auto. Seemed a bit flakey at times (some apps wouldnt work, some just
stopped working, some wanted $$$ to work) and you needed a cable to plug
the phone into a usb port, so i just sort of gravitated back to the std
ford offering: Audio, phone, navigation, climate. It does okay.

But then I saw an add on faecesbook for a wirefree dongle that makes
andriod auto and apple carplay *wireless*. I always thought apple
carplay was already wireless, but Android was certainly not. Prices on
f/book were all over the shop. Even temu sell 'em for au$18. So i looked
    on Amazon au.

Was marked at au$49, (was offered a $10 off voucher for god knows why), delivered tomorrow (today) and 30 day money back warranty. So i had some
other stuff to buy, so bit the bullet.

Turned up today, with an adapter (usb to usb-c) and some instructions.
went out and plugged it into a usb port opposite the ciggy lighter,
turned the power on, and a message appeared on the screen asking me to
pair it to my phones Bluetooth. Which i did. And away it went! I was
expecting an argument, and all i got was success! Didnt even read the instructions. Turned the power off, waited 30 seconds, turned it back
on, and there was Waze working. (Worth having Android auto just for
Waze) We have a lot of new speed cameras in Gippsland... I have also
updated my little Garmin dashcam for the first time in 4 years. it has
camera alerts, so be interesting how my trip up the block on Wednesday
    goes... what picks up what.

For those that have Android Auto, worth a look.

Excellent. Thanks very much. I bought one of those Chinese "all in one"
head units for my kid's Hyundai Elantra a while ago that is supposed to support wireless android auto, and while it works well when it works
it's luck of the draw when it comes to reliability. Works 100% reliably
if plugged in with a cable, but it's ability to remain connected
wirelessly is flakey at best. This may be just the shot, so once again
    thanks for the heads up.

And +1 on Waze. It's the best navi program out there by miles.

Even big W are selling a version of them. Works a treat. now a permanent fixture of my road-going enjoyment. Few things to learn via the android
auto app, but worth every cent. went past 2 new fixed speed cams that i
didnt know were there, Waze alerted me that "police are ahead". I guess
the warnings will become more accurate (fixed cam ahead) as they are
reported more. The little Garmin stayed silent....

i was waaiting to find out about the generator i had in for repair...
rang 'em and said i'd be going past.. "nope, note here yet.." okay.. so
i got about 10 k past the town where i'd bought it, got a phone call:
"It's here!" so i turned around. now how the fuck do i enter an address
in waze? Easy! Press the microphone on the screen, and say "Gippsland
power equipment".. Sure, and away it went. took me to the door without entering an address. pretty damm good...

    love it.

Waze is awesome. I have Google Maps, the built in Ford Navi system which itself is very good for a factory unit, but neither of them are a patch
    on Waze.

Yep, love that as well. It's piss easy. My only gripe is that if I want
to save a place as a "favourite" I have to do it on the phone as it
won't let me do it on the car's screen for some reason. It's an oddball
thing, but that's the only bug I've found with it. In every other
    respect it's brilliant.
