The Aukus alliance seemed like a good idea at the time. Now, with Trump
in charge, not so much. The meeting next week between Airbus Albo and
Trump (if it happens) will be very interesting. I'm betting Trump will
jack the price of the subs up, and demand more non-refundable payments
from Australia, till we're in so deep we cant pull out. He'll also
DEMAND that the Virginia class subs MUST assist the US Navy in any war,
inc versus china in the South china Sea.
I'd tell him to shove his subs up his arsehole and walk *. Walk straight
to the UK, and start trying to buy Astute class subs, if they haven't
done so already. Faster, smaller, less crew, lot cheaper, and on par
with the US subs. Get 3-4 as soon as possible, and THEN worry about
building our own. (...If we must. I wouldn't bother building here, just
buy off the shelf, and get to work!)...) As a sovereign nation, we cant
be told what to do, or how much to spend on defence. Wonder where he
wants everyone to spend this extra money?
