yes, tradies have always favored them due to their reliability and
    longevity, afaik.

Actually Felix reliability and longevity have little to do with
commercial sales, as most commercial vehicles are purchased on a
business lease over a 3 year period and even the shittiest Chinese ute
will last that long in a work environment. The two biggest reasons for
their commercial popularity are resale value and feel deals which is
    where Toyota is king.

The biggest selling Hilux used to be the single cab Workmate, very basic
and very cheap, used to cost less than $25k so they were very good value tradie utes but for some reason Toyota no longer sell base models for anything like that price.
Cheapest Hilux now cost almost $40k, don't know how that compares to
other makes but they are no longer the basic cheap work horse they used
    to be.

It’s called inflation Daryl. I’m beginning to understand why you failed in business.

He also failed basic maths and economics, the price increase isn't just
due to inflation although that is a part it, the biggest increase is due
to Toyota deciding to no longer sell the very base model which was my
point that he missed, the new base model is now much higher spec than
    the old.
Entry level used to a 2.7lt 4cyl with a manual trans, now entry level is
a 2.4lt TD, not sure if you can still get a manual but most now seem to
be auto, also get a lot more standard equip.
I suspect that Toyota decided that they weren't making any money from
the very basic Hilux so they decided to drop that model and only sell
    higher profit models.

No doubt it was because no one was buying the base spec Hilux.

point that he missed, the new base model is now much higher spec than
    the old.

Nope, not missed, Toyota are doing the same with the Yaris and Corolla
hatches - no longer offering base models. Use to be that the Corolla
hatch was cheaper than the Corolla sedan but no longer, the Corolla
    sedan comes up cheaper.

Entry level used to a 2.7lt 4cyl with a manual trans, now entry level is
a 2.4lt TD, not sure if you can still get a manual but most now seem to

Marketing to the gullible, people like the kit, people like Darren and
value a vehicle based on "the kit" it comes with as standard. Darren
made a big deal of "the kit" some time ago.

I suspect that Toyota decided that they weren't making any money from
the very basic Hilux so they decided to drop that model and only sell
    higher profit models.

    Likely weren't selling too many.
