    wow. that's a lot more hi res and sophisticated than mine. how do you
    get the icons to go in the middle of the panel?

    Under Panel preferences > Display, you just shrink the size of
    the panel -- leave "Automatically increase the length" checked.

    And if you unlock the panel, you can stick it where ever you like.
