22.1 Kernel is 6.8 at launch (listed as entry "Linux").

    https://web.archive.org/web/20250304095612/https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=mint

    22.2 Kernel is 6.14 .

    https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=mint

You can do an inxi -F and see how much of a difference
    this would make.

The 6 series kernels are not the same as the 5.15 in 21.3 .
There is a bit of a hardware divide, between 21.3 (older machines)
and 22.x (newer machines). If you find one does not work for you,
    try the other.

Well, I was curious. Made an image and upgraded. I see nothing new or changed (yet).
Hypnotix was one of the noted upgrades but I don't use it.

Kernel 6.14 is available but I'm still at 6.8.0.79, no change.

I did see my user avatar on the login screen, whoopee.

Yes, I've read the the release notes but I want to figure out exactly what they mean. I usually wait awhile before upgrading. I'm not much for the "cutting edge."

/Thinner Ubuntu fonts: A more modern slimmer version of the Ubuntu font
family is now shipped as standard./

Ah, so that was the cause of my font problem in Seamonkey's newsreader.
New and unread messages didn't get displayed in bold anymore, which was
really annoying. I spent a few hours trying to fix it, then almost
    decided to install another newsreader.

I reinstalled the old fonts and the problem went away immediately.

    Thanks Ubuntu.

Well, it is necessary, as it keeps your Repo pointers in good working order. There is a fair amount of Repo breakage out there, on a day to day basis.
Just my random sample of things I load and test. Newer things receive more attention than older things.

I "upgraded" two laptops yesterday. It went very quickly and was probably not really necessary. There were no problems.

Well, it is necessary, as it keeps your Repo pointers in good working order. There is a fair amount of Repo breakage out there, on a day to day basis. Just my random sample of things I load and test. Newer things receive more attention than older things.

And IIRC, some applications got bumped up to a higher version.
They took out the dang synaptic application. (I put it back).

The blog says 22.2 Beta, but the menu item itself in mintupdae does

That is what I would expect. The blog is dated 12 August 2025.

I just did it via the Update Manager notification, which never said it
was a beta version, so I assume it wasn't

No, I downloaded the beta version a few weeks ago. When they put a release
in the notification it's no longer beta.

    Release notes
    https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_zara.php

Those release notes are currently identical to the Mint 22.1 release
notes at <https://linuxmint.com/rel_xia.php>, except for minimal
    changes:
    -a 1) Changing "22.1" -> "22.2"
    -a 2) Changing "Xia" -> "Zara"
    -a 3) Three sponsor's logos.
    -a 4) Nothing else.

I do not yet see 22.2 on the Linux Mint Releases page at
    <https://www.linuxmint.com/download_all.php>

The blog post this morning and Distro Watch is saying it's formally released. And it's on the download list in your link now.

It's now the recommended download on their website. I guess they gave Linux Mint 22 and 22.1 users about a week headstart for the upgrade.

I wonder how a distro can be incompatible with a VM hypervisor? I
thought the whole point of virtualization is that the guest OS cannot
tell the difference between real and virtual hardware.

If you want "religion", stick with QEMU-KVM.

Commercial products, screw around with stuff. For example, there
are modules added to the host, via DKMS (a given version of VirtualBox
then, could have a "range of acceptable kernels" from a DKMS perspective).

It's the same with "virtualbox-additions" added to a Guest.
Driver level additions for various convenience features.

There was a complaint by VirtualBox once that "Microsoft changed the
number of parameters on some kernel call" requiring an emergency patch.
There is no way for us to imagine or figure out, exactly what they have
been messing with in the innards of the machine.
