I am a regular user of xsane and for many years scanned at 400 dpi.

Now I can only use 300 or 600 dpi.

Despite consulting ChatGPT and Google's AI I cannot find a way of
    changing it.

I do not want a convoluted solution involving further steps but it is irritating.

    :(

Driver and/or scanner capabilities happen to change?

That being said, I don't think I've ever seen an option that wasn't a
    power of three.

    Hmmm.

    https://www.techadvisor.com/article/722155/brother-dcp-l3510cdw-review.html

"The scanner does a great job, and only takes a couple of seconds to scan
    an A4 sheet at 200dpi. <===

If you need higher resolution wait times at a little longer, but even at 200dpi,
quality is more than usable. The hinges extend to accommodate textbooks and other thick media.
    "

The 1200/2400 native scan resolution, you can downsample to 200, 300, 400 as factors of the 1200. It should not require anything fancy math-wise.
(My old scanner, I just put it back in the box, it had a scanner plugin
for Photoshop, that could <cough> scan at just about any resolution,
because the plugin did anti-aliasing, you could measure the dot pitch of
the material to be scanned, and set the scan resolution to double that,
and the plugin took care of the details.)

I would think, this is an issue with the software receiving the scan, as apparently this scanner does not support scanning over USB, and you're limited to some sort of wireless experience or similar. Perhaps you could try commanding a scan from your phone, and see if the limitations that way,
    differ from the XSane limitations.

FWIW I've a new Epson (V39II), and sane behaves very oddly.

xsane starts with 4800 dpi set, but allows setting of 384 at the bottom
end, then 400, 480, and upwards. The 384 is very odd.

    Simple Scan offers 75, 150, 200, 300...2400 dpi.

Epson Scan 2 offers much the same plus 240 but up to 1200 only. You can,
in addition, type in your own choice as well.

    (Epson's declared resolution is 4800dpi)

I've no idea what is responsible for the different resolution
selections. sane is especially annoying: it won't allow my preferred 200dpi.
