I may be old, but I'm not that inept yet. It sure should be a function of Mint to open a
folder (and subs) and allow you to scroll through and see previews. font viewer and font
manager let you come close but won't present a list like you see in installed fonts.

Should I turn of the PC and go back to sleep? (no smart comments please).

I don't think I've ever seen a preview thing for *un*installed fonts (as
per your subject); but that being said I also don't particularly go
    looking for them anymore.

Maybe it was a feature of a different file explorer that you're not
    using anymore?

I'm going brain dead. You're comment about "a different file explorer" made me just open
nemo and view 'icon view' and scale the icons larger. That's about as good as I wanted.
I can browse around and see what's there.

I have some 1,100+ fonts (files actually) in that folder. Some are zips so the count
could be higher. I didn't think it was that high but....

I just wanted to see what was in there. Idle time on my hands.
    Thanks Dan

Note that, on Linux, rCLinstalledrCY merely means the font file is in one
of the standard locations where the standard Fontconfig font-matching
    system can find it.

I have a couple of command-line scripts (demos of font/graphics APIs)
that can be used for preview purposes, without requiring font
    installation.

ThererCOs the font_chart script from this repo <https://gitlab.com/ldo/python_freetype_examples>, which generates a
full chart of the glyphs corresponding to all the characters in the
font (including unassigned glyphs). Sample output can be viewed here <https://www.deviantart.com/default-cube/gallery/56395641/python-freetype-examples>.

And there is bulk_font_sample from this repo <https://gitlab.com/ldo/qahirah_examples>, which outputs a paragraph
of traditional rCLlorem ipsumrCY text using any number of fonts that you specify on the command line. That one comes with a man page explaining
    all its options.

For both programs, the font can be specified as a pattern matching an rCLinstalledrCY font (i.e. it can be found via Fontconfig), or the
explicit name of a file. This can be a .ttf or .otf font file, or it
can even be a .zip file, containing a bunch of font files.

Yeah, writing is hard -- I meant to say that I wasn't aware of a preview
tool that could look at an arbitrary location
