    FYI...

    TinyURLs are not trusted by many people. You never know what's on the
    other side of that link and it's suspicious. The regular URL copied
    from the address bar is more appropriate.

    How much effort is involved in copy/paste from the address bar? It's
    certainly less steps than creating a TinyURL.

    The original URL provides lots of information about the hosting website
    and whether it's safe to click on it. That would be my suggestion.

    No, I don't do any social media and I don't have a google or microsoft
    account.

    I did load the tinyurl into Thunderbird, SRWare Iron, Brave, and Edge
    browsers, and all are redirected successfully to the long URL.

    On principles I seriously dislike opening a public page that demands I identify myself by using Facebook or similar.

    Thus I created a separate FFx profile just for using Facebook separate
    from any other browsing activity, so that they can not track me more
    than absolutely necessary. And I use it only with some friends.

    Thus I hesitate from opening a link found on Usenet that requires Facebook.

    +1

    Is there a better way to shorten those links
    that are forever long .. ? .. to post in usenet or emails.

    Just do not short them.

    Yes, shorten them when possible, and it usually is possible.

    For URLs from most commercial sites, you can *usually* delete the
    question mark and everything following it without harm, as users don't
    need shit like tracking monitors (utm=), facebook click IDs (fbclid=),
    referrer IDs, and other cookie-like trackers. Sometimes though it
    specifies vital parameters for displaying the page.

    (For what it's worth, I tried that with the fbcdn.net url upthread and
    it still didn't work.)

    Example -- take this bloated amazon.com URL: <https://www.amazon.com/HTML-Dummies-Ed-Tittel/dp/076450214X/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3N87O08OPVHSR&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.KLU-mKVmHCuaxCNnY-CBBQNElQXuyLNNaWmSll1-xD25S2EsfJiswYWHDUllNo_iMcCv1AMpBKOMhdRy28sWGSf9hrubOY8NH-K-11iR4-on9LVl1ElQZ9nMRIqwt-7Nz3VqYxDalCf5KbX1zmYHj8H1y4WmTMLf-VtcFovUssUEMP_AatMWdtnVw8CAmWcxmAgK5sAIZW2g0kX10J7mOMOf0jX8fXcuhZljrZqN6D4.KICXDfw4EJfiSqrnKdHzI0uLKaLa-iHxT8MtuwVr7p0&dib_tag=se&keywords=html+for+dummies&qid=1759815115&sprefix=html+for+dummies%2Caps%2C144&sr=8-2>

    Now delete from the question mark on, per above:

    <https://www.amazon.com/HTML-Dummies-Ed-Tittel/dp/076450214X/ref=sr_1_2>
    (URL still works fine)

    Now for amazon URLs, and sometimes news sites too, you can shorten more.
    Edit out the title/description and the mystery ending, like this,
    keeping only the domain, dp, and item number:

    <https://www.amazon.com/dp/076450214X>
    Viola.

    Post the whole link inside angled brackets.

    That's always good practice, and on some newsreaders it works. Ancient
    ones like mine don't get it, newer apps usually will. Many newsreaders
    will mung the url with extra returns to enforce line length. I hate
    when that happens.

    HTH.

    Now delete from the question mark on, per above:

    <https://www.amazon.com/HTML-Dummies-Ed-Tittel/dp/076450214X/ref=sr_1_2>
    (URL still works fine)

    Now for amazon URLs, and sometimes news sites too, you can shorten more.
    Edit out the title/description and the mystery ending, like this,
    keeping only the domain, dp, and item number:

    <https://www.amazon.com/dp/076450214X>
    Viola.

    The Copy Link function on that page shortens it even more. https://a.co/d/fqkbD51

    FYI...

    TinyURLs are not trusted by many people. You never know what's on the >>>> other side of that link and it's suspicious. The regular URL copied
    from the address bar is more appropriate.

    +1

    Is there a better way to shorten those links
    that are forever long .. ? .. to post in usenet or emails.

    Just do not short them.
    Yes, shorten them when possible, and it usually is possible.

    We were referring to the use of TinyURLs, not manually trimming the
    excess verborrea of URLs.

    For URLs from most commercial sites, you can *usually* delete the
    question mark and everything following it without harm, as users don't
    need shit like tracking monitors (utm=), facebook click IDs (fbclid=), referrer IDs, and other cookie-like trackers. Sometimes though it
    specifies vital parameters for displaying the page.

    (For what it's worth, I tried that with the fbcdn.net url upthread and
    it still didn't work.)

    Example -- take this bloated amazon.com URL: <https://www.amazon.com/HTML-Dummies-Ed-Tittel/dp/076450214X/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3N87O08OPVHSR&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.KLU-mKVmHCuaxCNnY-CBBQNElQXuyLNNaWmSll1-xD25S2EsfJiswYWHDUllNo_iMcCv1AMpBKOMhdRy28sWGSf9hrubOY8NH-K-11iR4-on9LVl1ElQZ9nMRIqwt-7Nz3VqYxDalCf5KbX1zmYHj8H1y4WmTMLf-VtcFovUssUEMP_AatMWdtnVw8CAmWcxmAgK5sAIZW2g0kX10J7mOMOf0jX8fXcuhZljrZqN6D4.KICXDfw4EJfiSqrnKdHzI0uLKaLa-iHxT8MtuwVr7p0&dib_tag=se&keywords=html+for+dummies&qid=1759815115&sprefix=html+for+dummies%2Caps%2C144&sr=8-2>

    I know.

    However, <https://www.amazon.com/HTML-Dummies-Ed-Tittel/dp/076450214X/>
    can be still read by a human if Amazon removes that product and guess
    what it was.

    Post the whole link inside angled brackets.

    That's always good practice, and on some newsreaders it works. Ancient
    ones like mine don't get it, newer apps usually will. Many newsreaders
    will mung the url with extra returns to enforce line length. I hate
    when that happens.

    HTH.
