    the same result?
    How a user (clueless or whatever) deals with having a choice of separate/combined with whatever seach engine is their decision.

    No. The address box is for typing URLs, not for searching. The search box
    is for searching for keywords, phrases etc.

    I do to. I don't like the way the combo box corrupts the URL when you even slightly mistype it.

    Not quite. It's a preference.

    What happens when you make a simple mistake, like "grc.cok" when you meant "grc.com"? With separate boxes it's much easier to make that little correction.

    When Firefox first introduced the combined address-and-search field,
    remember they called it the “Awesome Bar”?

    I tried it that way for a while, before deciding I preferred having the functions separate.
