Ghostery and uBlock Origin help make Fx still usable.

I've tried a few other browsers when they still would install with

I think you hit the nail on the head. "Your uses are much too simple".

I find that in a lot of things. I wrote software in my years, and if I tested it with a
simple straight forward practice, it worked. Hand it over to the client and they could
easily do some horrid ass-backwards things.

Standard practice! When using new software people (me included) do a
lot of flailing, resulting in unpredictable sequences of operations.
NOBODY can predict this weirdness. Best solution is to devise some sort
of trap so the whole thing doesn't explode.

I too don't have issues other than it fails on a few sites.
I'm finding that more and more 'secure' websites are simply failing with
the latest release Firefox/linux, while having no problems with an old
version of Chrome/linux. Going through a whole payment process at a
medical patient portal only to have NOTHING happen when I clicked the
    SUBMIT button is increasingly common.

I don't remember the last time with such a problem.

I think the last one I had was because I had to tick "I have read the
terms and conditions" which was not above the [save] button but on the
side, maybe a side panel with another colour. I did fire up Chrome
thinking it was a FF problem, then I noticed the tick and went back to
FF. I don't remember what organization it was.

I to am using 140.0.4 (64-bit). I have multiple tabs open, do my
banking, watch videos, and many other activities normal for a web
browser. I have been using Firefox since Netscape. I have never experienced any serious problem with Firefox, and if I do see a hiccup
it is resolved in the next update.

If you are staying away from Firefox because of the problem you read
about on this forum, you are being mis-lead and missing the use of a
    fine web browser.

I solved several of these problems (after much useless disabling of extensions) by deleting cookies+ with the lock-shaped thing to the left
of the URL in the URL bar. I have been reluctant to batch-delete
cookies etc. since I spent weeks trying to recover access to minor
websites that had been lost. This just deletes the cookies for the
current page, so no harm done. 3 sites working now (Costco, dropbox and
    one other).

Now I wonder why I had killer cookies in the first place...
