Microsoft is rolling out a new update for Notepad, introducing
lightweight formatting to provide additional flexibility in how you
structure content across your text files. It is hoped that this will
replace the functions previously available in WordPad.

The update will support Markdown-style input and files for users who
prefer to work directly with this lightweight markup language. A new
toolbar has been added to access the new formatting features, including
bold and italic styling, hyperlinks and support for simple lists and
    headings.

Videos demonstrating how this will work are available online, and the
official blog can be found here:

It's an old blog, but I haven't seen any more recent ones yet.

i didn't notice this until just today . . . using these freeware programs:

    libre office https://libreoffice.org
    notetab lite https://notetab.com/notetab-light
    ted notepad https://jsimlo.sk/notepad

i'd saved a libreoffice document (*.odt) in plain text (*.txt) that has a
greek font (olbgrk.ttf), which previously would not preserve the original
font format but show some plain text with lots of question marks "??????",
but upon opening that same file in any my installed text editors, notepad,
ted, notetab, it displays the olb greek font much to my pleasant surprise . . .

Text Formatting in Windows 11 Notepad
    Overview of New Features
Windows 11 has introduced text formatting features in Notepad, enhancing its >functionality beyond simple text editing. The update includes:
Markdown Support: Users can now format text using Markdown syntax, allowing
for bold, italics, lists, and headers.
Formatting Toolbar: A new toolbar enables users to apply formatting easily
    while typing or selecting text.
Toggle Views: Users can switch between formatted and Markdown syntax views,
providing flexibility in how they work with text.
    How to Use Text Formatting
    Applying Formatting:
Use the formatting toolbar to apply styles like bold, italics, and
    hyperlinks.
You can create lists and headings using the toolbar options.
    Switching Views:
Toggle between formatted view and Markdown syntax view using the status bar
    or view menu.
    Clearing Formatting:
If you want to revert to plain text, you can clear all formatting from the
    toolbar or the edit menu.
    Customization Options
Enable/Disable Formatting: Users can choose to disable the formatting features
entirely in the app settings if they prefer the classic Notepad experience.
Feedback and Updates: Microsoft encourages users to provide feedback on these
new features through the Feedback Hub.
This update aims to make Notepad more versatile while still allowing users to >maintain a simple text editing experience.

quite amazing . . . i did notice that only libreoffice works to copy this greek text and paste it into a browser "translate greek to english" window,
but copying from a text editor shows lots of extended characters w/accents

One more time creaping featurism. "Let's improve this, it's just
    a small addition."
Eventually you have _Word 95_ which takes _almost_ as much
resoruces and time to start up as Office, when all I wanted to do was
make a note, shopping list, or other trivial task.

The Notepad has a Settings wheel, and you can turn off some of
    the Features that way.

The markup bar is not enabled on mine (Formatting to Off).

I was not aware of that. Probably because I stopped using Wordpad
a long time ago, due in part to the feature bloat.
Which was my intent in the original post: features keep getting
added to programs, machines, etc, whether I want them or not.

Another area is automobiles: what started out as a basic car (or pickup) has been "improved" to be bigger, more powerful, more gadget
laden that what's considered a "basic" model today is the Top of The
Line with all options version of 20 years ago.
Computers have a similar issue: the desktop box (Win7) does not
handle any floppy, the laptop (Win11) does not handle CD/DVDs. I know,
I should have ripped the floppies to something else. I did: from 5 1/4
to 3.5. B-). I bought the external floppy reader, and mostly trashed
the floppies. What good is a Windows back up collection when you are
    missing a couple disks? Anyway.
At least I'm not trying to recover from cassette tapes.

    Okay, rant off.

The markup bar is not enabled on mine (Formatting to Off).
    I will have to look.
