"WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump said today Canada and the U.S. could
renew the trilateral North American free trade agreement rCo or just do separate
    deals instead.

During a brief press conference before a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney in the White House, Trump said Carney would leave Washington rCLhappyrCY but would not say why.

After Trump praised Carney as a great leader and tough negotiator, he told a reporter that he hasnrCOt come to an agreement with CarneyrCOs government yet rCLbecause I want to be a great man too.rCY

Carney largely ceded the press conference to Trump, who joked around and dug
in on his aggressive approach to trade, saying the U.S. wants to make its own steel and cars instead of bringing in imports.

Carney again called Trump a rCLtransformativerCY president, saying he has extracted unprecedented commitments from NATO members on defence spending.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said shortly before the meeting that if Carney canrCOt
reach a deal to end the U.S. sectoral tariffs, Ottawa should start hitting
    back hard with retaliatory measures."

    Trump cuddles Carney

The President joked about the upcoming rCyU.S./Canada mergerrCO

rCLLet me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments,rCY William Shakespeare wrote in Sonnet 116, and he appears to have been
prophetically talking about the very special relationship between
President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The first meeting between the two leaders a few months ago was friendly.
But todayrCOs press conference, before a tariff negotiation lunch, was essentially a cuddlefest. Carney called Trump a rCLtransformative President.rCY Trump joked about the upcoming rCLU.S./Canada merger,rCY and said the two countries had rCLnatural conflict and natural love,rCY like in any marriage.

The problem, Trump said, rCLis that they want a car company, and we want a
car company. ItrCOs a natural business conflictrCa nothing wrong with it.
When it comes to trade, the United States gave everything to Canada.
Other Presidents didnrCOt see that. They were good politicians, but they werenrCOt business oriented. WerCOve come a long way.rCY

Carney nodded along while Trump said open borders made America a rCLraging hellhole,rCY which affected Canada as well. Trump said that his policy of blowing Venezuelan drug boats out of the water had made Canada safer,
and Carney said rCLyep yep.rCY The rCLGolden DomerCY missile protection system also brought along a rCLyep,rCY and as for tariffs, Carney said, rCLthere are areas where we compete, and itrCOs in those areas where we have to come to agreement that works. But there are more areas where werCOre stronger together, and thatrCOs what werCOre focused on, and werCOre going to get the right deal.rCY

    rCLItrCOs true,rCY Trump said.

The press conference included the usual Trumpian side rants. The
Democrats had shut down the government. Chicago has a lot of murders and incompetent leaders. If the Democrats had won the Presidency, thererCOd be
men playing womenrCOs sports. TheyrCOd be taking away your children and changing their sex, and thererCOd be windmills everywhere. rCLIrCOm not sure werCOd even have a country,rCY Trump said.

But back to the matter at hand, Trump said, rCLI want to make the best
deal with Canada and also whatever the best deal is for Canada. Other
leaders have told me this, but Mark said he would too. A year ago we
were a dead country, and now we are the hottest country anywhere in the
world. ThererCOs never been a country in the world that has money coming
into it like this one. Maybe Canada. I do like CanadarCa The people of
Canada, they will love us again. Most of them still do. Maybe 25
percent. I assume a lot of rCyem. I think they love us.rCY

Regardless of whether or not thatrCOs true, Trump does appear to have
natural love for Prime Minister Carney. rCLI think herCOs a great Prime Minister,rCY Trump said. rCLI mean, he could represent me any time. He is
very strong, he is a very good leader. HerCOs a nice man, but he can be
nasty. Maybe as nasty as anybody. I can tell you this because I deal
with a lot of leaders all over the world. He is a world-class leader. He
is a man that knows what he wants. IrCOm not surprised he won the
election. HerCOs a good man, he does a great job, and herCOs a tough negotiator.rCY

So whatrCOs the holdup? A Canadian reporter asked. If herCOs such a great
man, then why donrCOt you reach a deal?

rCLBecause,rCY Trump said, sticking the landing, rCLI want to be a great man too.rCY
