That's the story we've been told. In reality it's more complicated.

Before the idea of Israel was even born there were hundreds of thousands
of people living in the area. Besides the bedouin (who traveled with
their flocks and mostly didn't stay in one place long) there were also farmers. Olive trees were a big crop. Some of those farmers had been on
the same property for generations. Most of the land was owned by and
rented from turks who were usually absentee landlords.

In that time there were jews and muslims living side by side and mostly getting along as they were all poor.

Usually when the land was sold it just meant there was a new landlord to
pay rent to. It was an almost feudal system.

When the euoropean jews started buying the land, rather than allowing
the current renters to stay they'd throw them off. Because they'd been subsistence farmers just barely surviving, they pretty much had no where
to go. So many moved to nearby towns & cities in an effort to make a
living. Some found jobs, but some couldn't and became beggars, and some
    of them of course died.

This understandably made a lot of those people very angry.

Once again I'll recommend Daryl Cooper's audio series, Fear and Loathing
in the New Jerusalem. It's the best thing out there to learn about the
history of the region, as close to an unbiased telling of the story as
I've ever found. Unparalleled in fact.

That's the story we've been told. In reality it's more complicated.

Let's back up. It's not really that complicated.

The Jews were originally from the Land of Canaanites. The broke away and estabished the Kingdom of Solomon, 970 BCE to 931 BCE. He owned all the
land. There were no Arabs in Judah or anywhere else at that time.

Judah got invaded and all the land was stolen from the Jews and the Jews
that remained alive were sentenced to slavery.

Apparently, the land of Judah was invaded by Arabs, under the Rashidun Caliphate, in 637 or 638 CE, after a siege.

This event marked the beginning of Islamic rule over the city, with the Rashidun army led by Abu Ubayda and the caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab
traveling to the city to receive its surrender.

Before the idea of Israel was even born there were hundreds of
    thousands
of people living in the area. Besides the bedouin (who traveled with
their flocks and mostly didn't stay in one place long) there were also farmers. Olive trees were a big crop. Some of those farmers had been on

This understandably made a lot of those people very angry.

Based on these historical facts above, the Arab League nations, and
maybe every country on the planet, all owe the Jewish nation trillions
    of dollars in reparations.

So how do you recognize a diatribe? It favors one side or the other.
What is ugly about politics? It is always a struggle for power,
complete with attempts to massage truth with pr. The goal is to get
your guy elected. There was a time when the thought was "may the best
person win." That is no longer considered. My guy must win is the
    thought now.

Or in the case of war, my side must win, whatever it takes.

Don't get riled up Dude, it's not like any of us were living there back
    then!

Let's back up. It's not really that complicated.

The Jews were originally from the Land of Canaanites. The broke away and estabished the Kingdom of Solomon, 970 BCE to 931 BCE. He owned all the land. There were no Arabs in Judah or anywhere else at that time.

Not quite. The Hebrews were originally from Egypt. They left / were
thrown out, and after a lot of hardship got to Canaan which they
conquered and took away from the Canaanites.

They lived there for a long time as an affiliated / confederated tribal people, but eventually decided to get themselves a king (because all the
other cool people around them had one), even though their prophets told
them that god said they'd regret it.

There were some other peoples around and sometimes they fought them but
the Hebrews pretty much held their own. Until the Babylonians came...

Judah got invaded and all the land was stolen from the Jews and the Jews that remained alive were sentenced to slavery.

Then they came back home from Babylon and lived there for a while more
or less successfully until the Romans came, conquered them, and
eventually after some uprisings threw them out.

The Roman empire eventually fell and the land was run by various types.
Some of the Jews returned. And then Mohamed came and...

And that's when the Arabs took over the area. Eventually the Caliphate
moved into what is now Turkey, taking over Constantinople and renaming
it because that's what people do. The Calif in Istanbul owned all the
land (because he was the big man who had taken it from other Arabs). But
as the centuries went by, he gave some of it away here and there to
people who'd done things he liked. That's where the landlords came from
who were renting out the land to mostly Arabs and a few Jews.

Before the idea of Israel was even born there were hundreds of thousands
of people living in the area. Besides the bedouin (who traveled with
their flocks and mostly didn't stay in one place long) there were also

maybe every country on the planet, all owe the Jewish nation trillions

But what about the Canaanites? Why do they get shafted? Just because
they're all dead is no reason!

That's the story we've been told. In reality it's more complicated.

Before the idea of Israel was even born there were hundreds of thousands >>> of people living in the area. Besides the bedouin (who traveled with
their flocks and mostly didn't stay in one place long) there were also
farmers. Olive trees were a big crop. Some of those farmers had been on
the same property for generations. Most of the land was owned by and
rented from turks who were usually absentee landlords.

In that time there were jews and muslims living side by side and mostly
getting along as they were all poor.

Usually when the land was sold it just meant there was a new landlord to >>> pay rent to. It was an almost feudal system.

When the euoropean jews started buying the land, rather than allowing
the current renters to stay they'd throw them off. Because they'd been
subsistence farmers just barely surviving, they pretty much had no where >>> to go. So many moved to nearby towns & cities in an effort to make a
living. Some found jobs, but some couldn't and became beggars, and some
    of them of course died.

This understandably made a lot of those people very angry.

That comes very close to being understandable, real and not political
    diatribe. Thanks.

So how do you recognize a diatribe? It favors one side or the other.
What is ugly about politics? It is always a struggle for power,
complete with attempts to massage truth with pr. The goal is to get
your guy elected. There was a time when the thought was "may the best
person win." That is no longer considered. My guy must win is the
    thought now.

You just posted a diatribe. Good work!
Or in the case of war, my side must win, whatever it takes.

When someone declares war on you and tries to kill you, that's a reason
to fight back, otherwise you lose and then you're dead.

That's the story we've been told. In reality it's more complicated.

Let's back up. It's not really that complicated.

The Jews were originally from the Land of Canaanites. The broke away and >>>> estabished the Kingdom of Solomon, 970 BCE to 931 BCE. He owned all the >>>> land. There were no Arabs in Judah or anywhere else at that time.

Apparently, the land of Judah was invaded by Arabs, under the Rashidun >>>> Caliphate, in 637 or 638 CE, after a siege.

This event marked the beginning of Islamic rule over the city, with the >>>> Rashidun army led by Abu Ubayda and the caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab
traveling to the city to receive its surrender.

See how diatribe works? Apply whatever massaging necessary to justify
you position. Wilson's piece describes the situation now, and recent
events that brought it about. What happened in the year 637 has no
relevance unless it can be made to support what you want to say.

There is a reason they call it Judah and Arabia.

Let me be clear: the true owners of any land are the indigenous people
    who lived there first.

All land should be returned, with reparations, to the rightful owners.

    Let's not be hypocritical:

That means if you are standing on Native American land anywhere you
should get the fuck off it and free the land to the real owners of
Canada. You are the invader and the colonizer of North America.

That's cute. I have no doubt that you do realize this fantasy will
    remain fantasy.

Wait! What? That's the argument for giving the Holy Land back to the
    Arabs in Gaza.

So, you're not in favor of restoring ancestral land?

    You sound confused.
Indigenous roots: The term Canada is derived from the word kanata
    spoken
    by the St. Lawrence Iroquoians.

    Which is absolute nonsense.

My statement is not a defense of any one side in a conflict.

Or in the case of war, my side must win, whatever it takes.

When someone declares war on you and tries to kill you, that's a reason
to fight back, otherwise you lose and then you're dead.

But as with japan and germany and wwii, when the enemy is defeated,
you do not attempt to destroy their culture or kill all their people.
You make peace and you help them rebuild.

As much as the japs and the geries were hated at the time.
