    As an aside, and on a not-so-hilarious note, surely it ought to be
    possible to manhandle the barrier in an emergency (such as the one
    self-caused by the occupants of that pickup truck)?

    It wasn't only those two who faced danger, after all. There was also the
    driver of the approaching train(s) and any passengers on it, especially
    in the case of a derailment. Plus anyone else who happened to be around.
