An elderly pedestrian died in hospital last week following a collision involving a cyclist riding the Tour de Manc sportive last weekend.

Greater Manchester Police has made no arrests but have appealed for
information as the investigation into the fatal collision during the
    Manchester event continues.

The force explained that the collision happened in Tameside at around 12pm
on Sunday 4 May, a participant in the Tour de Manc sportive hitting an 80-year-old female pedestrian on Mottram Road in Stalybridge. Officers say
it is believed that the cyclist was overtaking another rider when the
collision occurred, close the junction of Fern Bank.

The cyclist, who sustained minor injuries, remained at the scene and
Greater Manchester Police has not made any arrests. An 80-year-old woman
was seriously injured and died in hospital on 7 May last week, three days
    after the collision.

Greater Manchester Police this weekend released an appeal for information:
"As officers continue their investigation, they are asking for anyone who
may have witnessed the incident or has any information to please come
forward. The cyclist was taking part in an event and officers are
particularly keen on other cyclists who may have witnessed the incident or
    have footage to come forward.

"This also includes anyone with dashcam, CCTV, mobile, or doorbell footage
from the wider area. Officers can be contacted via 101, 0161 856 4741, or
our Live Chat service at gmp.police.uk, quoting log number 1238 of
04/05/25. Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity
    Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."

A spokesperson for the event said they are "truly devastated" by the
incident and said their "heartfelt thoughts are with the family and friends
    of the deceased".

"We will be co-operating fully with all relevant authorities," they added, stressing that all riders were given a safety briefing ahead of the event.

According to a witness who was quoted by Mail Online (link is external),
the pedestrian "stepped out, and the cyclist hit her".

The Tour de Manc is a non-profit charity cycling event which raises money
for a host of charities. It was first run in 2014 and the 2025 edition saw participants given a choice of routes ranging from 60km to 200km.

If the chav on the fairy bike "remained at the scene", why wasn't he
    arrested.

He was lucky he hadn't abused anyone on FaceBook, I'd guess.

If the chav on the fairy bike "remained at the scene", why wasn't he arrested.

He was lucky he hadn't abused anyone on FaceBook, I'd guess.

I was unpleasantly surprised to read what a ’sportive’ was:

    Quote:

    What is a sportive?

A sportive (or gran fondo) is essentially a bike race that isn’t a race. Occasionally they’ll be timed, but more often, it’s less about how fast you finish and more about how much fun you can have along the way. They’re a great precursor to racing road or gravel, because they give you the
experience of sharing the start line with other riders, riding in groups,
and crossing a finish line—but they don’t come with the stress.

Sportives tend to be fairly long in duration—usually including 100-mile or longer options—but often have a short course option as well. And generally, they’re mass start races, meaning everyone starts at the same time.

Finally, sportives typically take place on roads that are open to traffic. Sometimes, they’ll have cops or volunteers directing traffic at key intersections, but never count on that: Assume you need to obey the rules
of the road, stop at stop signs, and look for traffic before proceeding. Unquote

    But, even worse, there’s this:

    Quote:

Finally, make sure you’re practicing eating and drinking for longer rides, especially if you’re newer to endurance riding. You’ll need to eat and drink to make it through a sportive event without bonking, so get
comfortable sipping from your bottle or grabbing a snack and eating with
    one hand while pedaling. Unquote

Imagine if that was a car driver, racing but not racing in the style of a
timed ’sportive’ on a public road, taking a snack at the wheel, the outcry from cyclists would be immense.

    "bonking"?

It seems to mean something different to that of the 1960s…

    From the BikeRadar web site:

Quote: The bonk is a funny name for a terrible feeling, when suddenly
there's nothing left in the tank, the legs turn to jelly and getting to the finish or just back home becomes an altogether supreme effort of will.

There are many names to describe this feeling, with 'hitting the wall', 'la fringale' and 'the knock' all popular in the peloton.

In a race or sportive, bonking certainly means game over. Your hopes of a
good placing or time go out of the window. Unquote.

So there you have it. Bonking means your non-race race timing is shot to ribbons.

Imagine if that was a car driver, racing but not racing in the style of a
timed ’sportive’ on a public road, taking a snack at the wheel, the outcry
    from cyclists would be immense.
