JK deserves to be a billionaire.
Those in charge of crafting the cinematic installments
also deserve highest credits.
The TV networks have been playing the HP films, kind of
continually, all thru the Xmas/NY holiday period. As
such I kinda had to see them all - most else was crap -
in original order.
From the very first film it was obvious that these
were not going to be 'cheap' adaptations. Big
gorgeous sets (real & virtual), expertly picked
acting talent, a great sense of the "look and feel"
Rowling created and a focus on human characters
over 'special effects'. The 'effects' enhanced
the illusion but never took over - a big diff from
most fantasy/sci-fi films these days.
Also to be commended - the characters/films "grew up"
during the series ... the first was kinda for the
kiddies but more adult concerns and problems and
wants slowly developed over the series.
Another good point - which we see best in British
material - is that some real horrors and agony
lurked for the sweet little characters. American
'kid' films are mostly honey and chocolate in
that respect. Brit kids in stories expect to SUFFER -
face deadly threats and deep conspiracies and be
generally ignored, discounted, used and abused.
Now HOW a seemingly ordinary, unlucky, transiently
employed 'housewife' like Rowling came up with
stories of such width and breadth whilst sitting
on commuter trains - nobody knows. The quality
was maintained all through the series too, not
just one flash in the brain-pan stretched out.
Getting all of that respectably onto film was
another wonder unto itself.
