Plymouth Argyle did indeed win 1-0, although no doubt helped in no small
way by Liverool picking a team of substitutes.

People criticised Manchester United for withdrawing from the FA Cup in

that's a more dignified approach than participating when you're not

Did a previous Liverpool managed not make a similar mistake in the FA
cup in his first year. Possibly even Klopp ? (yes, 2-2 vs. Exeter)

They did not pick a team of substitutes, either, they picked a team with
a lot of reserves, some of whom only rarely get into the matchday squad.

I mean resting Salah, Robertson, Virgil, Konaté, Allison, Gakpo, Jones
and Szoboslai, Gravenberch - nearly all of whom started against spurs in midweek made sense.

But why not play McAllister from the beginning, and why not bring on
Jones in the second half ?

Slot has been more vested in rotating his squad (for the most part) and
using all five subs each match than Klopp ever was, so I am puzzled with
    this one.

After dropping 10 players the Forest substitute keeper dropped the ball
from the first cross of the match, which gifted Exeter the opening goal.
Forest went 2-1 up only for Exeter to equalise from a goal mouth
scramble. Despite having a player sent off Exeter looked the more
dangerous team in the second half and Forest really couldn't have
complained if Exeter had gone on to win.

After 22 minutes of injury time (12 minutes of which were due to Awoniyi needing treatment and eventually going off with a head injury) and 30
minutes of extra time, Forest won on penalties.

Another Premier League team who didn't take the competition seriously
enough to pick their strongest team, but unlike Liverpool Forest (just)
    got away with it.
