• Intercontinental Cup final.

From MH@21:1/5 to All on Wed Dec 18 09:38:58 2024
Is everyone all excited for the big final today? Should be really
competitive match between the most storied team in all of Europe (and
one of the top 3 currently in the Spanish league) and the 16th best team
    in Mexico.

    Go Pachuca !!

Not a chance. In a shock result, Real Madrid won 3-0.

Why waste time with meaningless competitions like this? And no I did
    not watch it.

It's not actually the Intercontinental Cup. It's the FIFA
Intercontinental Cup. The old Intercontinental Cup actually determined
the unofficial World Champions, so it meant something. This new
tournament is a complete waste of time.

What's the point in watching a top European side playing some
South American team - that wouldn't be a match for them - for
some meaningless trophy? They should use these types of one-off
exhibition games for U 21 teams or something...

It wasn't always like this, mind you...

Rafa Benitez knows all about it too...

    :-)

Say what you will about the World Cup and whatever this cup is called
and the numerous other cups and the lack of representation of Oceanic,
African and South American confederations. But we are hosting the 2025
IIHF World Junior championships here on the Iceberg next week and I do
not see one single country represented from any of those confederations!

Also, it seems we are catering to the Europeans with the matches all
being played early in the afternoon, except the ones with Kanada involved.

    Tchau!

It certainly wasn't. Both Club World Cup Finalists in 2000 were South
American; 1 European team only ended 4th and the other European team
(who'd relinquished the opportunity to play in their domestic Cup
because winning the Club World Cup was so important to them) went out in
    the 1st round.

Not to mention the South American dominance of the Intercontinental Cup
    between 1976 and 1985.

Nice try, but not 100% correct. It was more about the FA's bid
for the 2006 FIFA World Cup and nothing to do with the trophy
    itself being 'that' important.

Manchester United had originally not wanted to play in the
inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in Brazil... the prospect of which
horrified the FA and the British government as they thought it
would harm their bid for the 2006 World Cup. (In hindsight it
wouldn't have.. as England were not getting the 2006 World Cup
    anyway!)

Not to mention the South American dominance of the
Intercontinental Cup between 1976 and 1985.

I suspect they were the only ones taking it seriously. Back in
the days when it wasn't just about money, what better motive was
there than to put one over those arrogant Europeans? If I was
South American I'd probably feel the same!
