From Blueshirt@21:1/5 to All on Thu Dec 5 19:42:21 2024
As nobody seems to be covering this very important club
tournament taking place in the USA next Summer, I thought I'd
    start the ball rolling...

The draw this evening threw up an interesting group for
everyone's favourite team in Blue, ("World Champions" in 2021 of
course) but it seems there are a lot of other teams taking part,
so we might as well cover the whole draw!

2025 FIFA Club World Cup Group Stage Draw:

Group A: Palmeiras, FC Porto, Al Ahly, Inter Miami

Group B: Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid, Botafogo, Seattle
    Sounders

Group C: Bayern Munich, Auckland City, Boca Juniors, Benfica

Group D: Flamengo, Espérance, Chelsea FC, Club Leon

Group E: River Plate, Urawa Red Diamonds, CF Monterrey,
    Inter-Milan

Group F: Fluminense, Borussia Dortmund, Ulsan HD, Mamelodi
    Sundowns

Group G: Manchester City, Wydad AC, Al Ain,Juventus

Group H: Real Madrid, Al-Hilal, Pachuca, FC Salzburg

The tournament starts on 15th June 2025 and is being broadcast
    on DAZN (Free!)

Very intriguing. I'm definitely interested in running a SophCon for
    this.

2025 FIFA Club World Cup Group Stage Draw:

Group A: Palmeiras, FC Porto, Al Ahly, Inter Miami

Hmm... can Inter Miami pull the upset here? Naah, Porto and Palmeiras.

Group B: Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid, Botafogo, Seattle
    Sounders

    PSG and Atleti

Group C: Bayern Munich, Auckland City, Boca Juniors, Benfica

    Bayern and Benfica

Group D: Flamengo, Espérance, Chelsea FC, Club Leon

    Chelsea and Flamengo

Group E: River Plate, Urawa Red Diamonds, CF Monterrey,
    Inter-Milan

    Inter and River

Group F: Fluminense, Borussia Dortmund, Ulsan HD, Mamelodi
    Sundowns

What's relegation-bound Fluminense doing here? Dortmund and Ulsan

Group G: Manchester City, Wydad AC, Al Ain,Juventus

Tough draw for Juve, but hopefully we can get through. City and Juve

Group H: Real Madrid, Al-Hilal, Pachuca, FC Salzburg

    Real Madrid and... Al Hilal?

The tournament starts on 15th June 2025 and is being broadcast
    on DAZN (Free!)

If Juve is on the East Coast, I'll make an effort to go.

Inter-Miami & Palmeiras... FIFA will want Messi to go through,
so I'm sure events will conspire for it to happen.

Otherwise I'd pretty much agree with all of your other picks.

That's generally what having a tournament in the US means.

    What not Canada and Mexico?

So, given that Europe is being given 12 places at this tournament,
compared to 1 for Oceania and only 6 for South America even, based on
some unspecified "set of objective metrics and criteria", is this really
a genuine World Championship? It's extremely unfair. Should we boycott

The draw this evening threw up an interesting group for
everyone's favourite team in Blue, ("World Champions" in 2021 of
course) but it seems there are a lot of other teams taking part,
so we might as well cover the whole draw!

2025 FIFA Club World Cup Group Stage Draw:

Somehow the UEFA delegation only has 2 clubs from the current Champions
    League top 10.

Group A: Palmeiras, FC Porto, Al Ahly, Inter Miami

    Warm balls for Messi?

It does seem odd that a confed with no winners in the last 11 editions,

    Of course not.
If some teams qualify based on results 4 years ago, and others based on
being in the host country, and yet others based on an aribtrary quota of
two teams per country (Salzburg I am looking at you) it is pretty hard
to call this a genuine world championship.

I plan to. Really not at all interested in another unnecessary
tournament which the UEFA teams will dominate anyway, even if
Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayer, Arsenal, Atalanta and Napoli and the like
have been excluded in favour of weaker UEFA teams.

I thought you liked all these "world" type club competitions?
Surely an officially organised FIFA tournament with 32 teams is
better than a one-off game between just two teams competing to
become the "world champions"? (Where no Asian or African team
could become the best club side in the world!!!)

Whilst on the subject of English football, the only team that's only
ever won the World Cup in the year they hosted it and never won it (or
even reached the final) outside of their own country is England.

Anyway, I want to know why Fluminense, Chelsea, Flamengo etc get another

Don't forget to mention that blind Russian lines-man! If VAR was
around in 1966 I'm sure the Germans would have taken Jules Rimet
back to Deutschland. The Russians never really got over
Operation Barbarossa though did they? So Comrade Lines-man saw
    what he wanted to see.

I am reliably informed that the England team of 1970 was better
than the one in 1966, unfortunately it was a dodgy Chelsea
goal-keeper that cost them then. (But he did okay when it
counted in the blue shirt so we'll let him off.) So yeah, I'm
sure FIFA fixed it for England in 1966. We can all see how
corrupt they are... today they are just less shameless!

It is possible that the 2034 World Cup was awarded to Saudi Arabia

On the balance of probabilities i would be leaning very much towards the viewpoint that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia bought the 2034 F.I.F.A.
World Cup by spreading its oil money around to a variety of F.I.F.A.
bank accounts and-or it's leading directors. This oil money would of

DAZN allowing the 2025 Club World Cup to be televised live on
it's platform seems to be because of Saudi money... if the
reports are to be believed obviously. But if the reports are
untrue, how could DAZN pay FIFA for the television rights and

make money somehow. Plus, FIFA don't just give worldwide
television rights away! So someone has bank-rolled it.
