from Ebony magazine circa 1951:
Wynonie was just another ragged, unemployed blues singer until press
agent Jimmy Evans met him in 1947. He had been singing blues back home
in Omaha, Neb. and on the West Coast for a long time but getting
nowhere fast. Evans himself says: "He was raucous, loud and colorful
ù a great entertainer." Under Evans guidance he recorded æGood Rocking Tonight' and leaped into prominence, it became a juke box favorite...
A shrewd operator. Evans managed to wrangle an unusual contract from
King Records. Wynonie gets royalties amounting to $2500 every three
months, whether he works or not. Today he averages $1000 a week, playing
top Negro theatres, clubs and one-night stands. With his terrific
showmanship and personal appeal, Mr. Blues has sold himself all over the
south and the midwest. His biggest fan is his wife, Gertrude, (he calls
her Ice-cream), a former New Orleans graduate nurse. With a boxer, two parakeets and several tropical fish, she lives in their 8-room English
Manor type house in St. Albans, Long Island while he tours the country
in a luxurious Cadillac trailer.
Back in Omaha, his friends called him Nonie, and from his teens he was a
great dancer. 'Nonie and Velda' regularly performed in public with
flamboyant adagio, tap, and ballroom dancing; Velda said he would remind
you of Fred Astaire.
