MY FAVE 20 RECORDS BY A VOCAL GROUP

    TODAY........FROM 1953

Note : only TWO of these records listed were released at the
time over here in the UK. They will be identified as I get to them

    MONEY HONEY - THE DRIFTERS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPJ7N5_o-u8

Their debut on record and one of the best things they ever did.Clyde at
the helm of course on a song for Atlantic that I heard first in the
Elvis version circa 1957 or so. I didn’t hear the Drifters original
until much later---and when I did it became my #1 fave record of 1953 a position its held ever since

A SUNDAY KIND OF LOVE - THE HARPTONES https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y37GJy2gC10

FANTASTIC revival of the old Fran Warren semi-standard from 1947 with
the marvellous Willie Winfield doing the lead honors.Recorded for the
Bruce label (don’t some of these labels have awful names?) it’s since become a doowop classic---as it has been with me since I first heard it

WHITE CLIFFS OF DOVER - THE CHECKERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mG_ByT2yGg

Likewise The Checkers here do a great job updating the 1941 Bunny
Berigan song (made most famous by our own Vera Lynn in 1942).With a
whole wad of singles to their credit at this point their latest for
the King label was added to the long list.

BTW You’ll NEVER see a bluebird over the white cliffs of Dover--unless
it’s maybe the Dover in Delaware---‘tis a North American bird!! We don’t have bluebirds in England 😊

    GOOD LOVIN’ – THE CLOVERS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqjmWPtZfQ4

One group that was truly unstoppable at this time was The Clovers with
their output for Atlantic yielding solid hit after solid hit to which
“Good Lovin’” was no exception reaching #2 r&b

TOO MUCH LOVIN’ (MUCH TOO MUCH) – THE “5” ROYALES https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0pIV229v4Y

One of their best from the veteran group delivering to Big Bess and
her famous Apollo label another hit and a #4 chart place. This was their
    fourth side to chart.

RACK ‘ EM BACK – BOBBY MITCHELL & THE TOPPERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=334w56rRAYI

One of the top New Orleans acts of the day makes an appearance here
with one of their best ever records on the Imperial label. One of the
earliest of the many group classics to get booted in the early 70’s

THE WAY I FEEL – THE DRIFTERS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zGlBrz58zg

Wonderful ballad with Clyde (lead) of course recorded for Atlantic at
the same August 1953 session that produced “Money Honey” and “Let The Boogie Woogie Roll”.

    CRAZY,CRAZY,CRAZY – THE “5” ROYALES https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAOYeU-4Yfk

One side of the double-sided smash coupled with “Help Me Somebody” on Apollo. That one was the #1 record r&b but I’m going here for the even
better flip that scored a #5 place on the BB r&b chart

HOW WOULD YOU KNOW – THE ROBINS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-DXARAk1I8

By now firmly ensconced on the giant RCA label The Robins release the
beautiful “How Would You Know” in September 1953 with a wonderful Grady Chapman lead

    IF I CAN’T HAVE YOU – THE FLAMINGOS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlblXENuuRw

Enter the Flamingos with their debut record---and what a debut!! Signed
to Art Sheridan’s Chance label in Chicago the wonderful “If I Can’t Have You” (with Sollie McElroy lead) was recorded in January 1953 and
    released in that March

MY SADDEST HOUR – THE FIVE KEYS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSo-kUdIngc

Make way for the Five Keys! With one of my very favorites by them
recorded in September 1953 and released that December on Aladdin here
are the boys with Maryland Pierce and Dickie Smith up front. Another one
that was booted big time in the early 70’s

    SOMEDAY SOMEWAY – THE FLAMINGOS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5iNn6m_9JY

The great jumpin’ flip of “If I Can’t Have You” above---again featuring Sollie Mc on lead and backed by the swinging King Kolax band. As with
many other Chance label records from this time this was booted bigtime
    in the early 70’s

    GONE – THE DRIFTERS (ALTERNATE)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZZnTg82jH4

    No,we haven’t gone off beam and included a 1955 record in error---this
is an ALTERNATE version of “Gone” by the boys---and a most excellent one IMO And recorded in 1953 of course! Thanks go to the mysterious Ms
    EvaDStruc for posting, Thanks Eva!

    BABY PLEASE – THE MOONGLOWS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQnr6WBnc_E

Super Harvey Fuqua lead on their debut record for the Chance label in
Chicago backed by Red Holloway & his boys recorded in September 1953 and released a month later. Song co-written by Alan Freed. Of course it was!

    GET IT – THE ROYALS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DhPSCATzMM

Released on Federal in June 1953 this was the Royals record that
introduced them to the Billboard r&b chart where they deservedly scored
a #6 hit with one of their very best pre-Midnighters recordings

I DIDN’T WANT TO DO IT – THE SPIDERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkmpvWlq5lM

All the way from New Orleans here ‘s the GREAT debut single from The
Spiders released on Imperial at the end of 1953 with a sparkling review
in BB in early January 1954.IMO these guys were just about the best
vocal group to come out of the Crescent City based on their full
    repertoire

    LAUNDROMAT BLUES – THE “5” ROYALES https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-J3GuUvJeU

Another of my very favorite sides by a great group as the boys here wail
this “party number” in very best fashion. This was the super flipside of the great “Too Much Lovin’ (Much Too Much)” on Apollo listed above

BABY IT’S YOU – THE SPANIELS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_cI6RB_xds

Enter Mr Pookie Hudson one of the best leads in the business here on
“Baby It’s You” recorded May 1953 as the first release not just by The Spaniels—but first on the just set up Vee Jay label. When the record
turned out so popular that the new label couldn’t cope with demand distribution was farmed out to the (then) more established Chance
label. The group remade this song in 1958

    GEE – THE CROWS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfOzZP_0ZqQ

A milestone record in several ways---one being it was a pioneering r&b
record that crossed over to the Billboard POP chart (in 1954)---reaching
#14. Released on George Goldner’s new Rama label in mid-1953 it
eventually rose to #2 on the Billboard r&b chart as well as making the
pop chart (as above). And (from my point of view) it made minor
history---in becoming one of the very first American r&b group records
to get a UK release (here it was on Columbia)

    CARRIED AWAY – THE FLAMINGOS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7FmIatmVFs

Right away I’ll alienate one or two readers here I expect when I say
that the topside here---the much revered by many soaring “Golden
Teardrops” ballad on doesn’t do that much for me and I much prefer the rockin’ “Carried Away” (both led by Sollie McElroy) on the Chance label

    BUBBLING UNDER

    CRAWLIN’ THE CLOVERS
    A THOUSAND STARS THE RIVILEERS
    YOU’RE MINE THE CRICKETS
CRYING IN THE CHAPEL THE ORIOLES *
    4 X 11 = 44 BOBBY MITCHELL & THE TOPPERS

*as you might have guessed “Crying In The Chapel” was the second of the records listed here to get a UK release – on the London label (but sadly
    ONLY as a 78rpm)

I think because Ernie Lee was in the military at the time.

25 ¦ Love Me Til Your Dying Day ¦ Muskateers

Not a real big fave of mine but I have this on Roxy 801 (78 only)
in 1952 with a Swing Time 331 issue later in 1952. What say you?

I don't buy Swing Time 331 for 1952. The first Swing Time review in 1953
is #322 on Jan. 17. No way #331 could have come out in 1952. As for Roxy
I never knew about it, and it does say 1952 in Kreiter's book, but it
has a different flip side than the Swing Time issue, so it might not be
the same recording. It also adds the word "Ill" to the title. If it
turns out that it's the same recording of course I'll move it to 1952.
The flip on Roxy is "Goodbye My Love."

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ro90CUGrYBk

This video presents it as the same version, but I have my doubts. It's
not the record being played, it's something with studio talk and great
sound quality while the "Goodbye My Love" video from the 78 sounds like
a cylinder from like 1892. That same version with the studio talk is on
another video with the Swing Time CD Box Set pictured.

I suspect that they made a scan of the Roxy 78 and played the track from
the box set on the video.

Okay, just got the answer from Unca Marvy's Serenaders article.

In 1953, Los Angeles' Swing Time label purchased a truckload of masters
from small Detroit labels and the Musketeers songs were released on
Swing Time in April. There were a few changes: "Musketeers" was
misspelled as "Muskateers", "Goodbye My Love" was re-titled "Deep In My
Heart" (both phrases are part of the lyrics), and they straightened out
the pronouns to agree with the words: "Love Me Til Your Dying Day".
Finally, they used different takes of the songs, and "Dying Day" now had
an instrumental bridge that was around twice as long as on the Roxy
release. The Serenaders were unaware of this release.

So the Swing Time releases were different takes of the same 2 songs that
    were issued on Roxy.

    TODAY........FROM 1953

For 1953 I'm only going to list my fave vocal group sides that have
not been listed/mentioned by Roger or Bruce.

One reason being, I'm going to merge all three 1953 vocal group fave
listings (from Roger, Bruce, and Geoff) into one list by Artist for
the potential benefit of all of our Usenet Group followers.

Anyway, here are Geoff's 13 unique vocal group faves for 1953:

The Blenders - If That's The Way You Want It Baby [MGM 11488;b-side] -

    CARRIED AWAY – THE FLAMINGOS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7FmIatmVFs

Right away I’ll alienate one or two readers here I expect when I say
that the topside here---the much revered by many soaring “Golden Teardrops” ballad on doesn’t do that much for me and I much prefer the rockin’ “Carried Away” (both led by Sollie McElroy) on the Chance label

Glad someone agrees with me on this point!
