He had 8 other records on the Billboard Pop charts, but they all peaked
pretty low. After reading your post I looked him up in Whitburn and
then I listened to his 1960 version of "You Don't Know Me," his first
record to chart. Bruce would hate it because it has a lot of
violins--too much even for me--but Lenny Welch was carving out a niche
for himself as a pop singer with a distinctly soulful voice.

BTW he was born in Asbury Park, NJ.

I remember meeting Lenny around 1960 when he was first recording for
Cadence. He came by the Avondale Club on one of our Sunday afternoon
gigs. A lreally nice fellow as i recall.

    Where was that club?

I see one now in the UK and one in Arizona.

PS - "Rock And Roll Mama" just came on in my car on shuffle. Loved it.

This Avondale was located on Brandt Pike just on the edge of Dayton
back in thiose days. It was a ballroom that could be rented out for
events. Radio station WONE was the first to have Sunday dances there
sometime in 1959. When they stopped, WING dj Bob Holliday moved his
"Biggest Hop in Dayton" there from a smaller club where he'd been
    having his Sunday shows.

You can see photos of us playing there on my Web site.
