The newest episode of ROOTS ROCK RADIO is now archived at the link
    below. Here's the playlist:

    1. REBEL ‘ROUSER, Duane Eddy

Duane's first really big hit in 1958 on both sides of the Atlantic.
Here's how it fares in my Top 10 list of fave 1958 instrumentals

    1. Rebel Rouser Duane Eddy
    2. Rumble Link Wray
    3. Tequila Champs
    4. Ramrod Duane Eddy
    5. Manhattan Spiritual Reg Owen
    6. Guitar Boogie Shuffle Virtues
    7. Rock Bottom Little Walter
    8. Peter Gunn Henry Mancini
    9. Cannon Ball Duane Eddy
    10. Rockhouse Ray Charles

    2. SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL, Bill Haley & His Comets

An almost impossibly rare case of a cover record scoring a 10 with me
    with the
original Joe Turner version scoring an even bigger 10 (more like 11!!)

    3. WHO DO YOU LOVE, Bo Diddley

Tho I'm not big on lyrics it's impossible to miss the absolutely SUPERB
imagery in this Diddley classic (like the "cobra skin necktie" and
"human skull chimney stack" for instance). And of course as I mentioned
not long ago its the record responsible for me declaring that in the
very VERY unlikely case of me ever
actually fathering a child of the femme gender I'm naming her "Arlene" 😉

    10. THE TRAIN KEPT A-ROLLIN’, The Johnny Brunette Trio

The UK version of this number featured in the 1958 movie "6.5 Special"
(based on the then current BBC-TV series of that name) doesn't *quite*
match up to the Burnette classic version 😉

    12. DREAM LOVER, Bobby Darin

I never cared much for the few Darin records we got over here before
    this one--
I disliked "Splish Splash" tho the UK Charlie Drake cover was MUCH
worse-and the few other things by him before "Dream Lover" were pretty
mundane. But "Dream Lover" was a top notch pop record---and it was a #1
    hit here in UK

    14. RAM-BUNK-SHUSH, The Ventures

From 1952 here's the original Lucky Millinder version (beating Bill
    Doggett too)

    15. MEAN, MEAN MAN, Wanda Jackson

Here's how Wanda did with this one on my 1958 Fave Femmes list posted on
    here a little while back

    1. MY JOHNNY – LITTLE MISS WANDA
    2. I CRIED A TEAR – LaVERN BAKER
    3. LET’S HAVE A PARTY – WANDA JACKSON
    4. BIG MAMA’S COMING HOME - BIG MAMA THORNTON
    5. OH GEE OH GOSH – THE KODOKS (sic)
6, BEEN A LONG TIME BABY – BABY WASHINGTON
    7. HOO WEE SWEET DADDY – KATIE WEBSTER
    8. DON’T TALK BACK – BIG MAMA THORNTON
    9. THE TIME – BABY WASHINGTON
    10. ROCKIN’ AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE – BRENDA LEE
    11. THE SHIRELLES – I MET HIM ON A SUNDAY
    12. DON’T SHOUT AT ME DADDY - ELLA JOHNSON
13.MEAN MEAN MAN – WANDA JACKSON

    16. SORRY (I Ran All the Way Home), The Impalas

There was no "Sorry" on the original record title. It just reads "I Ran
All The Way Home". The "Sorry" was added to copies in front of it
    charting

    19. LIPSTICK ON YOUR COLLAR, Connie Francis

One of her best---and what great guitar work (courtesy Mr George Barnes)

    25. CRYING IN THE RAIN, The Everly Brothers

One of the last really good Everly singles IMO (and a terrific
Goffin-King number) There were a couple of decent things after this
("Gone Gone Gone" and the UK #1 hit "The Price Of Love" but not much
    else I liked that much)

    33. IT’S GONNA WORK OUT FINE, Ike & Tina Turner

It's Mickey Baker doing the spoken bit with Tina on this one and of
course he'd also done the earlier unreleased version of the song with
    old partner Sylvia Vanderpool

    35. LAVENDER BLUE, Sammy Turner

Huge US hit for Sammy Turner produced by Leiber & Stoller that I l never
    liked
(tho I did like his later Phil Spector produced "Raincoat In The River")

    42. RED HOT, Billy Lee Riley

Easily my favorite version of the song and MUCH better than the original
    Billy "The Kid" Emerson version

    45. A TEENAGER IN LOVE, Dion & The Belmonts

Sadly Dion & co had to face not one---not two--not even three---but FOUR different UK cover versions over here by Craig Douglas,Rikki
Henderson,Dickie Valentine and Marty Wilde. Mr Wilde took chart honors
over here reaching #2 with his version (kept off the top spot by Bobby
Darin and "Dream Lover--see above) Craig Douglas managed #14 leaving
poor Dion & co to limp in at #28 the best they achieved on the UK chart
