• The king of Christmas

Johnny Marks (1909-1985) wrote "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day,"
"Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree,"
    and "A Holly Jolly Christmas."
I had no idea the same guy wrote all 4 of those.
And he created a publishing company, St. Nicholas Music Inc., so his
family is still making money from those perennials.
Santa hats off to Johnny Marks.

From the Nov. 29, 1958 issue of Cash Box:

    “Rudolph Breaks Sound Barrier

NEW YORK— "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" is breaking thru the
precedent set the last few years on the airways of ‘No Christmas songs
before Thanksgiving,” says Johnny Marks, composer and publisher of “Rudolph”. “This has occurred be- cause of the instrumental Rudolph cha-cha’s made by Hugo Winterhalter on RCA Victor and Hernando Hopkins
on ABC Paramount. With the Cha-Cha craze at its peak and with Victor and ABC-Paramount each trying to establish its version, the D.J.’s are
making an exception. It has spilled over into TV via the Dick Clark
Show, and others.” Marks has two other new Christ- mas singles on the
market in Harry Belafonte’s “I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day”
(Victor) and Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree”, (Decca).
