Don't get the attraction of #2, and can't stand "Telstar."

    Here is what I have:

    4 ¦ Green Onions ¦ Booker T. & MG's
    16 ¦ Broadway ¦ Hank Ballard & Midnighters
    65 ¦ So What ¦ Bill Black's Combo
    76 ¦ Wiggle Wobble ¦ Les Cooper

I gather that Roger does not consider "Broadway" to be an instrumental, otherwise it surely would have made his list.

That's shocking to me. The only use I see for "Pipeline" would be if
you're on the air and there's only like 68 seconds before the network
news comes on so you put some innocuous instrumental on that you're
gonna fade as the Network News comes on. It's like a nonentity to me.

This is a silly argument that we've had countless times before.
"Pipeline" was always a favorite instrumental of mine and is reflected
    that way in my list.
I'm sure I rated it above many instrumentals from that year that others
like better but that's because its MY opinion I'm putting forward and
    not theirs.

Its no different to imagining someone putting something like "Love Grows
(Where My Rosemary Goes)" that I consider pure 101% unadulterated junk
ahead of many excellent soul records of the day in a list of theirs.A
bit far fetched I know but I bet whats in my wallet there's someone out
    there who thinks that

There's tons of us out there who think that. But we already know that we
have very different taste outside of the 50s era.

By the way, IMO the so called "cusp years" here should only go from 1960
to 1962. I think 1963 fits much better in the 60s and beyond than it
does in the era before 1963. You've got a load of Beatles songs in 1963 including several of their most famous ones. There's a bunch of other
British white rock records from the likes of the DC5, Searchers, Stones,
Gerry & the Pacemakers, Hollies, Billy J. Kramer and others. There's a
load of Beach Boys. There's the first well known Bob Dylan stuff.

I just loaded all my favorites from 1962 and back on to one flash drive
to play in my car. I'm gonna make a second one with everything I like
best from 1963 and beyond. I think it makes better sense to consider our
era here to be 1947 to 1962. Three years before and three years after
    the 50s.

Unfortunately the drive won't play in my 2018 car. I get a message
saying that "This device may not be supported." The technology on a 64
GB flash drive is too play on a now 7 year old car stereo system. I fit
5605 songs on the drive and it's only 25% full.

    07. The John Barry Seven and Orch – The James Bond Theme (From Film
"Doctor No") [UK Columbia DB 4898]

One of the most famous movie linked themes and a serious omission from
my 1962 favorites list. It would almost certainly have made the Top 25
    list I posted.
    Thanks for reminding me

    11. David Rose AHO - The Stripper [MGM 13064] rec.1958
    #1 on BB-100 chart in July 1962;
BB ranked the record as #5 for 1962 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stripper

I always REALLY disliked this one!!!

    20 FAVE INSTRUMENTAL RECORDS

    TODAY........FROM 1962

    GREEN ONIONS – BOOKER T. & THE MG’S https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVWV0l2C6UM

My personal #1 fave instrumental of all time from the combo led by
    Booker
    T. Jones originally recorded in 1962 for the Stax label subsidiary Volt
Huge hit #1 BBr&b #3 BBpop. Failed to chart in 1962 on initial London
label release but soared to #6 in early 1980 on an Atlantic label
    reissue

    2. MISIRLOU – DICK DALE & THE DELTONES https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovdZLIXJFmY

Frantic guitar revival of the famous Asian number first popularized in
    the
US in 1941 by band leader Mitchell Ayres.Released on Deltone in 1962
it failed to chart and also failed to get UK release as a single

    3. SOUL TWIST – KING CURTIS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpruUfyNuHE

Notorious label-hopper Mr Ousley made a one shot stopover at Bobby
Robinson’s NYC based Enjoy label with his biggest hit that reached #1
BB r&b and #17 BB pop. The UK release on London did not chart

    4. PIPELINE – THE CHANTAYS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcjSi_79mVo

Yeah I know it charted well into 1963 but that was on Dot label. The
famous surf-rock number by this Santa Ana Ca group originated on the
Downey label in late 1962. Charted #4 BBpop #11 BB r&b.In UK the
London label release charted at #16

    5. WIPE OUT – THE SURFARIS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-c0rOUMHFaI

Five-man surf-rock outfit from Glendora Ca. famously paid to record
    their
“Surfer Joe” and had to scrabble around for a flipside---“Wipe Out” (complete
with the cackling laughter opening) in December 1962 with copies pressed
    on
the DFS label. A further release on the title came out on Princess label
    before
Dot took the now rejigged “Wipe Out” high in the charts in 1963.Charted
    #2
BBpop #10 BBr&b and again in 1966 at #16 BBpop. In UK on London it
    charted #8

    6. CLEO’s MOOD – JR. WALKER ALL STARS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jf_JnV6VvZY

Moody piece by the future smash Motown soul outfit was their second
    release
on the Harvey label in 1962 (after “Twist Lackawanna” –see below) but
    did
not score on the charts until reissued on Motown’s Soul subsid label in
    1966
where it scored #50 BB pop and #14 BBr7b. it did not appear as a single
    in UK
until 1966 on the Tamla-Motown label but did not chart

    7. LET’S GO (PONY) – THE ROUTERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZP9CPq-zimA

Despite the constant shouted repetition of the title I’ve always
considered this to be an instrumental in the same way that “Tequila” is
one (despite the several vocal repeats of the title). Released on Warner
Bros it charted at #19 BB pop. Also on Warner Bros in UK it failed to
    chart despite enormous radio exposure

    8. RINKY DINK – DAVE “BABY” CORTEZ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fn3_ks5JFis

I never went much for Cortez’s stuff (so don’t go looking for “The Happy Organ”
when we get to 1959) but I always dug this one. Originally on the Julia
label it was taken over by Chess for national distribution. Charted #10
BBpop #9 BB r&b.in UK it appeared on Pye International but did not
chart.BTW a short time afterwards the whole tune structure was lifted
and a vocal added for Bobby Rydell’s “The Cha Cha Cha”

    9. BALLAD OF PALADIN – DUANE EDDY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKM0Ge_3FMo

It was inevitable that Duane would get around to the terrific theme to
one of TV’s best ever Western series “Have Gun-Will Travel” which aired circa 1958 (does it ever still appear in USA? Never seen it here since
back then). Providing a great guitar version of the original TV theme
song (as by Johnny Western back then) it became Duane’s second single
for his new label RCA.Charted #33 BBpop and here in UK reached #10

    10. NUT ROCKER – B. BUMBLE & THE STINGERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwarHgdiuSM

Tchaikovsky gets a rock ‘n’ roll treatment here as the colorfully named
    B. Bumble & The Stingers cash in with a cover of the original version by
the just-as-colorfully named Jack B. Nimble & The Quicks combo. Released
on Rendezvous in US and Top Rank in UK it made #23 BBpop (US) but soared
    to #1 in the UK

    11. TELSTAR – THE TORNADOES
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZybJPO3WYs

Tho The Shadows’ “Wonderful Land” (see below) was the most successful UK instrumental of the year in their home country The Tornadoes and the Joe
    Meek
produced “Telstar” came a good second (for those wondering “Stranger On The Shore” was from 1961).On Decca in the UK and London in USA the
number reached #1 in both countries

    12. BOSS – THE RUMBLERS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUSwts6KnUA

Five man instrumental group hailing from Norwalk Ca who recorded the
    catchy
“Boss” for the Downey label. When it started getting local radio play
the much bigger Dot label moved in a took over distribution nationally.
The record made #87 BBpop released in UK on London but did not chart

    13. SO WHAT – BILL BLACK’S COMBO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW0oReX5x1s

The theme of “The Lloyd Thaxton Show” that was on US-TV screens in the 60’s
and one of Bill Black’s catchiest numbers in his extensive library of recordings for the Hi label. A #78 BB pop hit in US but the UK London
    release did not chart

    14. JELLY BREAD – BOOKER T. & MG’S https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ueoIbpf_1A

The moral of the tale is simple---when you’ve gorged yourself on “Green Onions”
then come down to Earth with a few helpings of “Jelly Bread” the direct followup
on Stax. Charted #82 BBpop released UK on London but failed to chart

    15. SHANK – BO DIDDLEY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EudqryrSQ-E

A favorite instrumental Bo track of mine that appears on the 1962
    Checker LP
“Bo Diddley’s A Twister” . Here in UK it appeared on a different LP compilation
“Hey Bo Diddley” on Pye International

    16. DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS – DUANE EDDY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KUBMT3aDm0

Following a change of labels Duane Eddy celebrates his first release of
    1962
on his new label RCA---a revival of the oldie but goldie “Deep In The
    Heart
Of Texas” originally from 1941 in a pretty horrid Alvino Rey version
    (tho
Gene Autry sings a much better version in his movie “Heart Of The Rio Grande”
from the following year. Charted by Duane at #78 BBpop and #19 in UK
    (also
    on RCA)

    17. BEACH PARTY – KING CURTIS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTP3xyeOWPY

Following the huge US success of “Soul Twist” King Ousley finds himself
    on
a bona fide major label for the first time since 1956 (when he recorded
for RCA’s Groove subsidiary) but sad to say to not much avail since it
will be 1964 before he sees major chart success again (still on Capitol
with “Soul Serenade”). Meantime he had to settle for a #60 BBpop chart place here. Not released as single in UK

    18. RED TOP – JERRY McCAIN
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8upnnsb3J4

Here’s a blues guy who’s been around the block a few times label hopping galore
with a few real hot records to his name—now on Columbia’s Okeh label
    with a nice
harmonica driven instrumental. The YT poster has an excellent detailed
    write up on the guy

    19. TWIST LACKAWANNA – JR. WALKER ALL STARS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tg4gWuMS624

Their debut record release and one of the earliest releases on Harvey
Fuqua’s self named label (destined to be eventually absorbed into the
growing Motown empire and take Junior & his guys with it) .Not a great seller—the outfit would have to wait until 1965 for their first taste of
    real success with “Shotgun”

    20.WIGGLE WOBBLE – LES COOPER & SOUL ROCKERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGo5k1ObOnw&t=39s

Both Les Cooper himself and Joe Grier the tenor sax player here were
    previously
involved with The Charts vocal group of “Deserie” fame (Grier sang lead) and as with the earlier record Cooper’s effort here was released by
Bobby & Danny Robinson on their Everlast label.Charted #22 BB pop #12
BBr&b. Released on Stateside label in UK but despite good radio play
    failed to chart
