The latest ROOTS ROCK RADIO is archived until December 30th at the link below. Here's the playlist:

    2. SPLISH SPLASH, Bobby Darin

Darin's second ever record here in UK (we got his version of "Rock
Island Line" earlier in 1956). I liked several of Darin's singles but
not this one. However his version shines when compared to the dreadful
UK cover which took most of the sales over here (charting at #7 whilst
Darin only managed a high of #19).

And I'm glad his friggin' boomerang never came back!!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQ_0WBNJkLA

    3. WHEN MY DREAMBOAT COMES HOME, Fats Domino

1956 was such a GREAT year for Fats!! I rate his "....Dreamboat" a high
8---but it still has a lot of top quality competition in my list of
    favorites by him that year

    1. I’m In Love Again Fats Domino
    2. Blue Monday Fats Domino
    3. My Blue Heaven Fats Domino
    4. Blueberry Hill Fats Domino
    5. Honey Chile Fats Domino
    6. Don’t Know What’s Wrong Fats Domino (unreleased)
    7. If You Need Me Fats Domino
    8. So Long Fats Domino
    9. When My Dreamboat Comes Home Fats Domino
    10. Don’t Blame It On Me Fats Domino

    4. WHO DO YOU LOVE, Bo Diddley

Even I who usually doesn't pay much heed to lyrics but instead goes by
    SOUND
was bowled over the first time I ever heard this Bo super-classic with
its vivid imagery of human skull chimney stacks, cobra snake neckties and
an out of control manic ice wagon. And I loved his girls name in the song---"Arlene". First time I'd ever heard of the name but one that cut
through even more when I later made the acquaintance on wax with The Chantels.........

    7. ALL NIGHT LONG, Jerry Lee Lewis

One of the best of the myriad of Jerry Lee recordings for Sun that lay unreleased for decades. Recorded at a 1957 summer session at 706 Union
Ave Memphis that also produced the single "Lewis Boogie" and the
(superior) LP version of "It'll Be Me".Personnel : Jerry Lee Lewis (vcl pno),Roland Janes (gtr),Jay W. Brown (bs),James Van Eaton(dms)

    10. AIN’T GOT NO HOME, Clarence “Frogman” Henry

The Frogman's best ever record IMO (tho I'm also very partial to his
later "I Don't Know Why" (better known as the retitled "But I Do" hit)
    that was covered
shortly afterwards by the mysterious "Luther & Little Eva" on King whose
true identities are still shrouded in some mystery

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GaPSv9kvhM

    18. FOOLS RUSH IN, Brook Benton

My long time favorite version of the oldie first recorded in 1940 by Bob
Crosby & His Orchestra and made most famous in the slightly later Glenn
MIller and Tommy Dorsey (vcl Frank Sinatra) versions. And of course much
later still in 1963 taken high into the charts by Rick Nelson (in a
version I never cared for much)

But for me THE version of this song HAS to be Mr Brook Benton with his
    classic reading

    19. JOHNNY B. GOODE, Chuck Berry

Here's how one of the greatest ever singles in rock 'n' roll sits on my
    1958 faves list

    1. Johnny B. Goode Chuck Berry
    2. Good Golly Miss Molly Little Richard
    3. It’ll Be Me Jerry Lee Lewis (LP version)
    4. For Your Precious Love Jerry Butler & Impressions
    5. (Night Time Is) The Right Time Ray Charles
    s
    22. POOR BOY, The Royaltones

Here's how "Poor Boy" figures in my 1958 instrumental faves list

    1. Rebel Rouser Duane Eddy – 1958
    2. Rumble Link Wray - 1958
    3. Tequila Champs – 1958
    4. Ramrod Duane Eddy – 1958
    5. Manhattan Spiritual Reg Owen – 1958
    6. Guitar Boogie Shuffle Virtues – 1958
    7. Cannon Ball Duane Eddy - 1958
    8..Moovin’ And Groovin’ Duane Eddy – 1958
    9. Detour Duane Eddy - 1958
    10.. Poor Boy Royaltones - 1958

    24. FOR YOUR LOVE, Ed Townsend

Here's one that doesn't get mentioned much on here but it's one I always
kinda liked. Not great but its a good 7 for me. Unlike the USA it didn't
pick up much radio play here but when I did hear it I liked it straight
away. And nothing has changed since..........

    28. MIND OVER MATTER, Nolan Strong & The Diablos

Great track by Nolan & co but it spawned a cover version that is also excellent. Step forward The Pirates--also of Detroit--on a very early
    Motown affiliate
    Mel-O-Dy.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3HK4oYa03A

Nolan will take nearly all the sales on this one leaving the "Pirates"
in the dust---until they revert to the name they recorded under on three earlier singles---and the name that will make them regular chart toppers
    in future years

    The Temptations of course

    36. COUNT EVERY STAR, The Rivieras

This one is okay but my favorite version of "Count Every Star" (no,NOT
The Ravens) is from 1955--and by The Rockers on the Carter label

Here's how it sits on my Faves list for that year :-

    40. Blue Velvet Clovers
    41. Stand By Me Guitar Slim
    42. Count Every Star Rockers
    43. Hide And Seek Joe Turner
    44. See You Later Alligator Bill Haley & His Comets
    45. Smokey Joe's Cafe Robins
    46. Rock This Joint This Morning Hal Paige & Whalers (unreleased)
    47. Bumpity Bump Smiley Lewis
    48. You Didn’t Learn It At Home “5” Royales
    49. Four Winds Dave Bartholomew
    50. Later Alligator Bobby Charles

    41. TUTTI FRUTTI, Little Richard

Here's the number that tops that 1955 list above.

The number that is one of the very GREATEST records ever made

The number that is--for me--one side of the GREATEST single ever
    released!!

    https://www.45cat.com/record/hlo8366#google_vignette

And the number that gives us the best definition of rock 'n' roll I know

    "WHA-BOP-A-LOO-BOP-A-LOP-BAM-BOOM"

What else do you need to know?

    43. IT WILL STAND, The Showmen

Beaten only by Ben E. King and "Stand By Me" in my 1961 faves list The
Showmen come next with their immortal "It Will Stand" that got little
airplay over here at the time but became a HUGE London r&b club classic
    in subsequent years

    45. WHY DON’T YOU WRITE ME, The Jacks

Here's a good example of a cover record being much better (IMO) than the original---here by The Feathers

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LH0iKKAEj8

This guy nails it tho :)

So was Tom Glazer's "On Top of Spaghetti." What's your point?

"On Top of Spaghetti" was a song parody of "On Top Of Old Smokey."
"Rubber Duckie" was an original composition.

Did you like the followup, "Do De Rubber Duck?"

It's pretty funky with a reggae beat. Maybe you can play it on your soul
    show.

Each worked as a novelty record, something I might hear on "The Dr.
Demento Show." I just have trouble imagining Top 40 radio trying to mix
    that stuff in.

    Don't know it.
