The latest ROOTS ROCK RADIO is archived until December 22nd at the link below. Here's the playlist:

    1. SMOKIE (Part 2), Bill Black’s Combo

Here's how "Smokie" sits on my fave instrumentals list

    80.Torquay Fireballs – 1959
    81.All Night Long Joe Houston - 1954
    82.Rockin’ With Reed Jimmy Reed – 1956
    83.Heavy Juice Tiny Bradshaw – 1953
    84.Because They’re Young Duane Eddy - 1960
    85.Theme From “A Summer Place” Percy Faith - 1959
    86.Big Guitar Frank DeRosa & De-Men - 1957
    87.Harlem Nocturne Viscounts - 1959
    88.Smokie -Part 2 Bill Black’s Combo - 1959
    89.Bayou Drive Clifton Chenier – 1959
    90.Yep! Duane Eddy - 1959

    5. DUST MY BROOM, Elmore James (1963 version)

It's good of course but IMO doesn't stand up to the "rated 10" 1951
    Trumpet original

    My 1951 faves list :-

    1. Rocket 88 Jackie Brenston
    2. Don’t You Know I Love You Clovers
    3. Sixty Minute Man Dominoes
    4. Dust My Broom Elmo James
    5. Lovin’ Machine Wynonie Harris

    8. OH BABY DOLL, Chuck Berry

Crime of the mid-20th century was that (for some unknown reason) Chuck's
"Oh Baby Doll" was passed over for UK release and never appeared on
    45rpm here

    10. LOVE ME, The Phantom

One of the most popular of the hundreds of rare r&r and rockabilly boots
that appeared in the early 70's

    12. IT’S ALL IN THE GAME, Tommy Edwards

A favorite ballad by Tommy but I also still have a soft spot for his
    original
1951 recording of the song too

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wdk9NKHoTfc

    15. DADDY COOL, The Rays

One side of one of my favorite double siders with "Silhouettes"

    25. DOWN THE ROAD, Smiley Lewis

Much the better side of Smiley's original "Blue Monday"--which falls by
the wayside IMO compared to Fats' later immaculate version of the song

    27. JAILHOUSE ROCK, Elvis Presley

My Elvis Top 5 for 1957

    1. Jailhouse Rock Elvis Presley
    2. All Shook Up Elvis Presley
    3. Santa Claus Is Back In Town Elvis Presley
    4. Got A Lot O’ Lovin’ To Do Elvis Presley
    5. Baby I Don’t Care Elvis Presley

    31. SEE YOU LATER, ALLIGATOR, Bill Haley & The Comets

Tho I like Bobby Charles' original better this still rates as one of
Haley's best cover versions ever up there with "Shake Rattle And Roll"
and of course "Rock Around The Clock"

    34. BLUEBERRY HILL, Fats Domino

The very first version of "Blueberry Hill" from 1940 by Sammy Kaye & His Orchestra (vocal Tommy Ryan)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgL5_9LAg7c

    39. OH WHAT A NITE FOR LOVE, Roy Tyson

Great to see someone else besides me likes this Roy Tyson number from
1963 that sits high on my favorites list for that year

    42. COME TO ME, Marv Johnson

It charted when United Artists took over distribution but the earliest incarnation of "Come To Me" was as Tamla 101---the very first record
    ever issued on the label

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH2Gi2rU6nU

    44. TONITE TONITE, The Mello-Kings

In 1959 a British company launched a b&w rock 'n'roll movie "Sweet Beat"
that like several other movies in the genre was "Grade Z" in all
    areas-acting, production,songs and general quality.

But....in the case of "Sweet Beat" the UK production outfit seems to
have done some kind of deal with Al Silver of Herald-Ember records in
the USA since a whole bunch of his signed artists appear (lip synching)
in the movie---including Fred Parris and the Five (tho you only see
four!) Satins,Billy Myles,Lee Allen,Cindy Mann ....and The Mello Kings
    (as seen below).

Apparently the movie was retitled "The Amorous Sex" for US consumption.
No, I don't know why either

Anyway here are the Mello-Kings as they appear in the movie

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18ne0geuiQY

    46. GEE WHIZ (Look At His Eyes), Carla Thomas

Here's where Carla sits in my fave femmes list for 1960

    1. A Fool In Love Ike & Tina Turner
    2. At Last Etta James
    3. Will You Love Me Tomorrow Shirelles
    4. Bye Bye Baby Mary Wells
    5. I Just Want To Make Love To You Etta James
    6. Tonight's The Night Shirelles
    7. All In My Mind Maxine Brown
    8. Angel Baby Rosie & Originals
    9. A Good Man Irma Thomas
    10. I Shot Mr. Lee Bobbettes (Atlantic version)
    11. Gee Whiz Carla Thomas

The Roy Tyson bubbled under on BB, so it's not really that close to
obscure. It was bigger nationally than "The Wind" by the Jesters. Tyson
was 11 years old at the time. So if the label had decided to list the
artist as Roy Tyson and the Rubies would it then magically be a vocal
    group record?

Clearly it was a business decision to list the artist as Roy Tyson in an
effort to launch this 11 year old kid as the next child star ala Stevie
Wonder and others. Not very likely an 11 year old would be accepted as a
    member of a vocal group.

    What wider commmmmmunity?

We have at most about 20 readers in this group. Probably more like 12.

And even if millions of people saw this and did not like the record, I
would consider that an honor. WHY THE FUCK would I want everyday

I too never tire of "Jailhouse Rock".
    -------
Wait a minute: I didn't say it was "Top 5 on my 1957 list," mainly
because I don't *have* a 1957 (or any other year) list. Roger, did you
mean it was top 5 on *your* list?

I respectfully disagree. I ranked "Jailhouse Rock" at #2 on my list of
1957 favorites, and at #2 on my list of Elvis favorites.

I'm with you. I never get tired of "Jailhouse Rock." Top 5 on my 1957
    list
    ------------

I too never tire of "Jailhouse Rock".
I would, however, proffer that opinion about "Love Me Tender," "In the
    Ghetto," and "Don't Cry Daddy."
    -----------
Those last two are embarrassing. "Love Me Tender" is a big favorite of
mine, although Bruce doesn't like it. Might be a gender thing.

I don't like "Love Me Tender" much either likewise with the much later glutinous "Don't Cry Daddy" .

I do however like several of his "later-than-this-newsgroup" singles
these being "Crying In The Chapel","Ain't That Loving You Baby","Tell Me Why","Guitar Man","In The Ghetto","Suspicious Minds","An American Trilogy","Burning Love","Always On My Mind" and "Moody Blue"

Like only about half of those and prefer this undubbed version of this

Not for me I'm afraid. The released version has that tremendous stark atmosphere part of which is due to the chorus etc. Take that away and it
loses some of its utter starkness

I also never liked In The Ghetto and Don't Cry Daddy. Love Me Tender is
OK, but I believe it could be a gender thing, probably being liked by
the ladies more than  the guys. If memory serves, LMT was Norm's most
    hated Elvis song.

Re: Jailhouse Rock, as a 10.1, it's #8 on my favorite Elvis'.
