The latest edition of ROOTS ROCK RADIO is archived until November 17th
at the link below. Here's the playlist:

    3. THE GIRL CAN’T HELP IT, Little Richard

Great theme song for the very best of the many rock 'n' roll movies of
    the 1950's

    4. BIP BOP BOOM, Mickey Hawks

Original (and impossibly rare) copies of this were credited to "Moon
Mullins & His Night Raiders on the Robbins Red (sic) label in 1958

    5. YOU CAN’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER, Bo Diddley

Probably Bo's biggest selling single here in UK--scraped the Record
Mirror Top 50 in 1962---and played to death in the London r&b clubs I frequented back then

    6. ALA-MEN-SY, The Quotations

So-so flipside but I much prefer the topside treatment of the old
standard "Imagination" that I played to death back in 1962

    7. BUTTERFLY, Charlie Gracie

I never liked this song much not in this original nor in the Andy
Williams cover (which got to #1 here in UK). I much preferred Charlie's followup "Fabulous"

    9. SAPPHIRE, Danny Oliver

It was "Big Danny Oliver" on the copies of this we sold in our store.
Firstly on the Trend label in 1958 for some reason it was reissued in
1965 on Trend's parent label Kapp. No I've no idea why either.

BTW the piano here is rumoured to be played by Dave "Baby" Cortez

    10. BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY, Elvis Presley

50% of a truly GREAT double sider on Sun label in 1954 that announced
the arrival of one Elvis Presley. Here's how It looks on my 1954 list

    1. Shake,Rattle And Roll Joe Turner
    2. Good Rockin' Tonight Elvis Presley
    3. I've Got A Woman Ray Charles
    4. That's All Right Elvis Presley
    5. Blue Moon Of Kentucky Elvis Presley

    11. ANGEL BABY, Rosie & The Originals

Everybody's favorite "bad" record. I loved it back then and nothing has
changed since (btw we got a slightly different take released here)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nOE534rb30

    23. BAD GIRL, The Miracles [Smokey Robinson]

The VERY FIRST record on the Motown label (catalog # G-1) released
circa April 1959. Exceedingly rate today expect to pay a four figure sum
    for a decent 45rpm copy

    25. CRY TO ME, Betty Harris

Whilst I just gotta give the #1 spot on this song to King Solomon and
his original version Betty's version is certainly no slouch either

Here's how she stands on my 1963 fave femmes list

    1. Hello Stranger Barbara Lewis
    2. Heat Wave Martha & Vasndellas
    3. The Love Of My Man Theola Kilgore
    4. Cry To Me Betty Harris
    5. Be My Baby Ronettes
    6. Sleigh Ride Ronettes
    7. That’s How Heartaches Are Made Baby Washington
    8. Da Doo Ron Ron Crystals
    9. You’re No Good Betty Everett
    10. Ruler Of My Heart Irma Thomas

    35. WE BELONG TOGETHER, Ritchie Valens

I've never really warmed to Ritchie's version of this one and much
prefer the Robert & Johnny duet version (hey now that's can idea for the
next "Faves" series...duets---I assume we can all agree on what a duet
    is :-)

    37. IT’S OVER, Roy Orbison

Here in UK the USA went the longest it has ever gone without a #1 record
in the NME chart after December 1962 when Elvis had a 2 week stay at #1
with "Return To Sender". The whole of 1963 saw only British artist
records at #1 for the entire year (1963 being the year the Beatles rose
to prominence of course). In fact it was June 1964 before the US enjoyed another #1 spot--then for two weeks with the above "It's Over" in the
top spot. UK artists then ruled again until October 1964 when The Big O returned to #1 (in a 3 week stay) with "Oh Pretty Woman"

    38. OH! BUT SHE DID, The El Capris

The Opals 1954 original on this is good but I dig the 1956 El Capris
version a bit more. The group came from Pittsburgh and really nailed it
with their version of a real good number

    40. HE’S A REBEL, The Crystals

The long running argument over who did this first is now finally settled
(I think). The Crystals beat Vikki Carr to the recording studio by 3
    days

    43. RANG TANG DING DONG (I Am the Japanese Sandman), The Cellos

In the late 1990's there was a newbie to the group (nice guy you'd like
him) who picked up on this Cellos record that he wasn't familiar with at
that time and it became a favorite for the guy---thanks to a mention
here by someone called Bill Bugge

    46. SMOKY [sic] PLACES, The Corsairs

Huge US hit and a big favorite of mine but one that wasn't issued here
in UK. Nobody knows why. Chess had a licence in place here so it wasn't
that. Maybe the original Tuff label wanted too much money?

Maybe not. Is "Over The Mountain, Cross The Sea" a duet record or a
vocal group record, given that Rex Garvin also sings on the record. Do
we go by what we hear and call it a "vocal group" record, or do we go by

Perhaps he chooses not to obsess over petty bullshit.

That would not seem likely given his many posts over this issue already.

Dean, the matter is not petty if one is seriously into vocal group
music, and Bill *did* choose to join in this 'obsession' for several
days but has now decided to withdraw from the public affray :-)

Does Johnnie sing at all on the song? I thought I heard that it was basically a duet between Rex

There are 3 voices on the record. I'm sure they sang it live without Rex
