    20 FAVE DUET RECORDS

    TODAY........FROM 1959

    1. DRUNK DRIVER’S COMING – THE RICHARD BROTHERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMxDWt8hTYY

Super blues duo on Strate-8 label (subsidiary of Fortune) in Detroit

    2. CASTIN’ MY SPELL – THE JOHNNY OTIS SHOW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdfoZb5vT7g

A favorite Johnny Otis side for Capitol (here teamed with Marci Lee) on
a great cover. For the original read on….

3, ‘TIL I KISSED YOU – THE EVERLY BROTHERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ1v423Vv7Q

Their best of ’59 IMO from a two-song July session for Cadence that also begat “Oh What A Feeling”

    4. CASTING MY SPELL – THE JOHNSON BROTHERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwOfRQed9aQ

Not to be confused with the UK group of that name this is the West
Coast Valor label original of the #2 Johnny Otis above

    5. I WANT TO GO HOME – CHARLES BROWN & AMOS MILBURN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFaNWqk_tWU

This is the number on Ace that Sam Cooke later reworked as “Bring It On
    Home To Me”.

    6. POOR JENNY – THE EVERLY BROTHERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHL4oqIitZk

There’s two versions of this--the US Cadence fight starts at ten the UK London fight starts at one

    7. STOLEN PROPERTY – THE RICHARD BROTHERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npAPjauNWEg

Excellent flipside to “Drunk Driver’s Coming” above

    8. EDUCATED FOOL – CHARLES BROWN & AMOS MILBURN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TP1vNi3Cfr0

And another excellent flip—this time to “I Want To Go Home” above

    9. BABY TALK – JAN & DEAN
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNTD_3IqWrk

Much better reworking of the Laurels’ original from the previous year

    10. MY RIFLE,MY PONY AND ME – DEAN MARTIN & RICKY NELSON (unreleased) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MXcL1F3OMs

A real highspot of the great 1959 hit western movie “Rio Bravo”

    11. I CAN’T SIT DOWN – MARIE & REX https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbIQbAtd6Do

Marie Knight & Rex Garvin team on this stormer for Carlton that just
scraped into the Billboard Hot 100

    12. TAKE A MESSAGE TO MARY – THE EVERLY BROTHERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNnPlbfAaqE

This was the topside and the most successful side of the single but I
    prefer the “Poor Jenny” side

    13. LET IT BE ME – THE EVERLY BROTHERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoDEnxcRAh0

Originally in French as “Je T’Appartiens” by Gilbert Becaud in 1955 then by Jill Corey in 1957 with English lyrics as “Let It Be Me”

    14. BIG BOY PETE – DON & DEWEY

Marci Lee joins Johnny Otis once more for the flipside to his “Castin’
    My Spell” above

    16. FARMER JOHN – DON & DEWEY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhyVf3Je89Q

Flip of “Big Boy Pete” above and the original version (later done by
    Carl & Commanders,Searchers,Premiers etc)

    17. IT’S TOO LATE – TARHEEL SLIM & LITTLE ANN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGOSBsHQTZo

Not sure. I know they were a foursome out of Jersey but not sure exactly
    who does the singing.

I don't care for the record much myself so it wouldn't make my list as
do neither of the big US hits "It Was I" and "Tell Him No" that I find
    pretty watery

    16 ¦ 'Til I Kissed You ¦ Everly Brothers

#134 and an 8. Their highest rated 45 of 1959 for me

    74 ¦ Tell Him No ¦ Travis & Bob

Not on my list as its a song I never liked in ANY version (and there are
    too many of them)

Also from 1959 are cover versions from :-

Dean & Marc (of the future Newbeats of "Bread And Butter" fame) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbb3iNezs_8

The Jackson Brothers (not THOSE Jacksons - these are white guys :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhEd5nakk-g

YT clip show the UK issue which has "Recorded by Big Top" which is
technically correct tho the US record was on Atco. The original
recording was done by Big Top and then sold on for release for whatever
    reason

The Lana Sisters (UK trio including a very young Dusty Springfield) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFRCkcuPhwA

UK release on Fontana and the version I recall hearing most on radio
here (tho none of them charted)

101 ¦ When Day Is Done ¦ Shirley & Lee

    #633 on my list and a 7

142 ¦ My Rifle, My Pony And Me ¦ Dean Martin & Ricky Nelson

    #349 and a 7

145 ¦ Music To My Ear ¦ Speck & Doyle

Just a 6 for me tho I remember this being booted in the 70's

210 ¦ There Is Something On Your Mind ¦ Big Jay McNeely (Little Sonny)

#74 and an 8 but under my current revised thinking I'm not considering
    it a duet

    215 ¦ Loud Mouth Annie ¦ Myles & Dupont

    Another 6

    242 ¦ Ballin' Keen ¦ Bobby & Terry Caraway

#564 and 7. Another one booted in the 70's

255 ¦ Fire In My Bones ¦ Reverend Cleophus Robinson And His Sister Josephine James

Didn't know this but I just played it. Not bad...probably a low 7

Definitely only 2 voices. Their second biggest hit was an instrumental.
