The latest ROOTS ROCK RADIO is archived at the link below until November 24th. Here's the playlist:
2. THAT MELLOW SAXOPHONE, Roy Montrell
Great number that was my nomination in Bruce's Obscurities contest in
May 2019 and which went on to win said contest. It also won the year end Champions battle at #1 there too.
In the special All Time Final Four contest in 2022 it ended #2 losing to
Mark's even better "Think" by the 5 Royales
4. TRYING TO GET TO YOU, Elvis Presley
An old Sun recording included on Elvis' debut RCA LP and soooooo much
better than the pretty ordinary Eagles original version from 1954
7. HARD TIMES (The Slop), Noble “Thin Man” Watts
Great instrumental! Here's where it figures on my instrumental faves
list
1. Green Onions Booker T. & The MG’s - 1962
2. Honky Tonk-Part 2 Bill Doggett - 1956
3. Raunchy Bill Justis - 1957
4. Hideaway Freddy King - 1961
5. Last Night Mar-Keys - 1961
6. Hand Clappin' Red Prysock - 1955
7. Juke Little Walter - 1952
8. Night Train Jimmy Forest – 1952
9. Peter Gunn Duane Eddy - 1959
10 Jam Up Tommy Ridgley - 1954
11.Hard Times (The Slop) Noble “Thin Man” Watts & Rhythm Sparks - 1957 12.Nervous Man Nervous Big Jay McNeely - 1953
8. MY JUANITA, The Crests
Their debut single in 1957 on the small Joyce label in NYC. Their first
and pretty easily their best too IMO
14. BE-BOP-A-LULA, Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps
I never tire of hoping that one day someone is going to turn up with the COMPLETE segment of this number from the movie "The Girl Can't Help It"
as filmed by 20th Century Fox
18. MONEY (That’s What I Want), Barrett Strong
Incredibly important influential single here in UK (released here via
Decca's London label). The song weaved its way into the repertoires of a
myriad then-recently formed UK beat groups including The Beatles and the
Stones
20. BOOGIE WOOGIE COUNTRY GIRL, Joe Turner
One of my favorite JT tracks that doesn't seem to get much mention on
here. It's my #1 placed JT record of 1956 and rates a 10 for me.
In USA it was the flip to his "Corrine Corrina" single on Atlantic in
March 1956---but here in UK it was flipped with "The Chicken And The
Hawk" on London in October 1956
28. SPOONFUL, Howlin’ Wolf
TREMENDOUS number that is my #1 favorite by him--an easy "10" here's
where it sits on my 1960 faves list
1. Georgia On My Mind Ray Charles
2. Stay Maurice Williams & Zodiacs
3. Let It Rock Chuck Berry
4. Spoonful Howlin' Wolf
5. A Fool In Love Ike & Tina Turner
38. BLUE MONDAY, Smiley Lewis
I prefer the "Down The Road" flip on this single. Smiley's original
"Blue Monday" is good but totally overshadowed by Fats' immaculate hit
version
41. CARRIED AWAY, The Flamingos
Easily my favorite side of the Chance single. I've always found the
collectors favorite "Golden Teardrops" fairly ordinary and over rated
43. YOUR LAST CHANCE, Lewis Lymon & The Teenchords
One of the highspots of the "Jamboree" movie is space-suited deejay
Jocko Henderson introducing the Lymon sibling and his guys with this
number. It was Lewis' ONLY release here in UK on Oriole label and valued
at £500+ today
In all my years involved in these records I've yet to even SEE a copy!!
44. TRUE LOVE GONE (Come On Home), The Enchanters
Originally on Mercer label then leased to Coral where they released
several other records (including the GREAT Christmas number "Mambo Santa Mambo".Beware the horrid Betty Madigan cover version (also on Coral)
