• What Did You Watch? 2024-12-31 (Tuesday)

From Arthur Lipscomb@21:1/5 to All on Wed Jan 1 07:44:31 2025
On Tuesday I decided to watch some Michelle Yeoh movies in my
collection. Half of them I had never seen before. I watched:

Magnificent Warriors (blu-ray) 1987 Hong Kong action movie starring
Michelle Yeoh as a Chinese secret agent (who is an awful lot like
Indiana Jones) who during the 1930s battle the Japanese who are
occupying a Chinese city. This was originally a blind buy, now it is my
second time watching it. It held up very well.

The Heroic Trio (4K disc) This was a blind buy double feature with its'
sequel, "Executioners." Heroic Trio is a 1993 fantasy movie from Hong
Kong, about three women who team up to do battle against an evil someone
or other who is kidnapping babies, I think so he can reincarnate in one
of them and become emperor of China, or something. I don't know. The
plot was a mess. And it really didn't help matters that the dubbed
dialogue didn't match the subtitles. The movie stars Michelle Yeoh as "Invisible Woman," Anita Mui as "Wonder Woman" and Maggie Cheung as
"Thief Catcher." At the start of the movie Yeoh is working for the
villain, but by the end of the movie she sees the error of her ways and
teams up with the other two women to help save the day. I'm not
entirely sure, but I think maybe this was supposed to be a comedy,
except it wasn't funny at all. It didn't help matters that the movie is
very stylized and due to often being able to see the wires, it kind of
    looks cheap.

Executioners (4K disc) 1993 sequel to "The Heroic Trio." I had never
seen this before either. This movie starts off with a nuclear bomb
detonating in the city the first movie takes place in. The movie was
extremely vague as if just that one city got nuked or the entire planet.
I want to assume it was a worldwide nuclear war, otherwise I don't
know why they all stayed in that city. Anyway, following the city they
all live in getting nuked, the three heroes from the first movie
(Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui and Maggie Cheung) all survived. And they
band together against an evil company that's overcharging people for
clean water and some other evil guy, who was trying to overthrow the government. This one was actually worse than the first one. And again,
I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be a comedy or not, but it
definitely wasn't funny. And who makes a sequel to a fantasy movie but
changes it up to post apocalyptic nuclear wasteland?

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (4K disc) 2020 movie directed by Ang Lee
and starring Chow Yun-fat, Michelle Yeoh, and Zhang Ziyi. Yun-fat and
Yeoh star as two friends who after having many adventures in their youth
are winding down in life. But things get complicated when Ziyi steals a
sword from Yun-fat while it was in Yeoh's care, prompting Yeoh to try to retrieve the sword. I've really oversimplified the plot. The movie
holds up extremely well and continues to be one of my favorites. The
fight scene between Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi continues to be one of
the best fight scene ever committed to film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzkhVVFRIIg

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew (Disney+) "Zero Friends Again" - Episode 6.
This was one of the better episodes by far. Dealing with the fallout
from episode 5, the kids are now on their own on a hostile planet while
Jod (Jude Law) has to talk his way out of an execution.

Abbott Elementary (Hulu) I watched the pilot episode of this "Office"
style comedy set in a Philadelphia public elementary school. First up
we meet some new teachers who are in over their heads, some seasoned
teachers who gave up caring long ago, and their incompetent principal
who blackmailed her way into the job. I'm surprised they admitted as
much to the film crew! I've been hearing great things about this show
for years and kept meaning to sample it. There is a cross over episode
with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia set to air next week, so I
    figured now or never.

Some Youtube videos and a lot of Subnautica. Well, not just watching

game and more to play during the holidays.

I played Subnautica, good game. Hate the sequel though, they ratcheted
up the difficulty way too high.

I'm currently playing 'The Planet Crafter'. Very much like Subnautica,
just on an uninhabitable planet that you have to terraform.

I've done good in this world. Now I'm tired and just want to be a cranky

Cool beans. I love watching her. Not that I stand outside her home and
just stare through the windows.. No, that would be wrong, but watching
her movies is considered acceptable behavior. ;)

You mean a 2000 movie, not 2020. A great movie that is well worth
    everyone watching at least once.
