• THE RETURN

I just watched an outstanding movie. THE RETURN is a retelling of the story
of Odysseus’s arrival on Ithaca several years after the end of the Trojan war. If you will recall from high school literature, nobody recognizes
their old king (except for his dog) and every man on the island is trying
to marry the “widowed” queen. This movie is so well done; I thought it never hit a wrong note. Ralph Feinnes plays Odysseus and Juliet Binoche
plays Penelope and they are terrific in their parts, as are all of the supporting players. The photography is gorgeous, the pacing is
appropriately deliberate, and even with its cautionary reflections on war’s cost to the soul, the payoff is satisfying. Bloody, but satisfying. In
fact, if you faint at the sight of blood, you may want to grab some
smelling salts before you watch. But I liked this movie a lot.

Critics liked it more than the hoi polloi. Looks like my sort.
(Director, though named Pasolini, is related to Luchino Visconti.)
