Now-a-days there are plenty of options!!
Too many. Which is why TV shows nowadays need to be more
about telling a good story and keeping people engaged. If
people get bored halfway through a show, they'll just switch
over to something else, and if people really dislike a
specific show, they won't watch it again.
Viewer ratings are down everywhere because people have too
many options and they can dip-in and dip-out of TV shows to
find something that interests them.
These days most films even have a wiki, so I can read the plot
and more importantly the end, to see if I even want to watch
it in the first place. :)

I didn't.
It's TV... Nobody is THAT nice and smarmy without having some

Meh. I object! If it's that predictable, it should not be used.
It's a trope! ;-)
Lame.
Oh, and beware of fake news too... we all know about that
one don't we? So never believe what they tell you. It's
all a conspiracy! #DemandTheTruth
Yeah, Soap boxing, sigh. Reminded me of good old Quincy,
where every episode was about one soap box or another.
It's TV... There has to be a 'message' in everything!
I object!
Just as there's always a twist at the end, there's always a
message to get across.
If it's that predictable, it's no longer a valid element of a
story.
as well as being a [kind of] prequel setting up "The War
Between the Land and the Sea"
What? What did I miss?
Nothing yet. Prequel means before...
But you said something about setting up. What was there that
set up anything?
Stay tuned until November/December for the answer.
What? Why then?

Different!
Still, if you're in a rush I suppose it enables people to
maximise their spare time... :-)

Well, I am sure some people might have thought Conrad was a
genuine bloke and that himself and Ruby would live happily ever
after.

Lame.
There will always be some sort of trope in an ongoing TV series.
A seemingly good guy that is really a bad guy is fairly common.
Oh, and beware of fake news too... we all know about that
one don't we? So never believe what they tell you. It's
all a conspiracy! #DemandTheTruth

A script is telling a story, there will usually be some sort of
message. Okay, maybe sometimes it can be a bit more in your face
these days as writers and producers think we are all stupid. But
Doctor Who having a message is nothing new... for instance, "The
Green Death" (from 1973) had a message in the script and it
worked well within the story... it was not in-your-face "soap
boxing" the way modern TV shows go about it.
Just as there's always a twist at the end, there's always a
message to get across.
If it's that predictable, it's no longer a valid element of a
story.
Depends on what the message is and how good the actual story
that it's wrapped up in is. It doesn't always have to be a
political allegory... but there's usually some sort of a
message somewhere, even if it's only subtle. Unfortunately RTD
doesn't tend to do subtle!

The spin-off show "The War Between the Land and the Sea", which
will feature the UNIT characters featured in this episode... as
well as the Sea Devils.
(This has been mentioned here before.)
Stay tuned until November/December for the answer.
What? Why then?
That's when "The War Between the Land and the Sea" will be
broadcast...

Another great insight there Dave...
I'm sure the usual suspects will complain about it once it does
air though... the Sea Devils didn't exactly go down well on
their last outing three years ago.

To be fair, I didn't think much of "Legend of the Sea Devils"
either... the story or the Sea Devils themselves. So it'll be
interesting to see how they are depicted in the spin-off. (Not
leaping around like Super Mario hopefully!)
After the Daleks the Sea Devils were my favourite Doctor Who
'monster'...
