Over the last few months we have held a couple of club president
briefings, firstly on the class license and most recently an update
from the Technical Advisory Committee (the TAC). On both occasions
we promised to make the recordings available and sadly I must advise
I have failed to find the time to edit and publish the videos to the
WIA YouTube channel.

However, I have some leave from work coming up, so some energy will
return. I do apologise for the slackness.

Preparations continue for the IARU region 3 AGM, to be held in
Bangkok, Thailand this coming November. The WIA is sending
Peter Young, VK3MV, to represent Australian amateur radio interests. Additionally we are fortunate that we have a director from VK on the
Region 3 IARU board, Oscar, VK3TX.

If you dont already know, I like my microwave equipment building and
operating, so it is with huge pride that I announce that the board
approved a significant record achieved on one of our least used bands
at 241GHz. Congratulations to Noel, VK3NH, and Andrew, VK3CV, for
their 10.9km achievement. Words cannot describe the difficulty in
construction to achieve a piece of working kit that operates at
241GHz, let alone making a contact at some distance. Now for those
HF operators, you are probably wondering why 10km is such a big deal
the challenges of fabricating dish, feeds and the mixer at these
frequencies is formidable. And then conditions and pointing the dish
with sub-degree precision boggle my little mind.
A special shoutout to Andrew, VK3CV, for making 122 and 134GHz more
accessible due to his work with the Silicon Radar device. Thanks to
Kevin, VK4UH, the WIA VHF-UHF Records Manager for managing the
recognition of these special achievements that push the boundaries
of radio communications.

Experimentation it floats me boat.

We are always looking for content for social media, website and

The WIA is very interested in hearing from an affiliated club re
hosting the 2025 WIA AGM. Typically we like to combine the WIA AGM
event with a significant club event sometime in the months around May.
For example, the Bundaberg Club executed a very successful event in
2024 pulling a significant number of attendees from all parts of VK.

Its an unseasonably warm winter in VK5 and recent storms and earth
tremors across Australia remind us how important it is to be prepared.
Good reminder to check our batteries and refresh our emergency
supplies. Before I know it Ill be cleaning gutters and trimming brush
ready for summer heat, as the cycle begins anew.

The WIA board continues to pursue actions that help members, although
the details might not always be apparent. Weve been applying a
consistent approach of improving procedures with the available
resources. Increasing membership numbers show that were on the right
track. Remember, were all ambassadors to the hobby and our actions
reflect not just on ourselves, but on our community.

Keep being awesome, keep experimenting and Amateur Radio has a secure
future.

On the note of experimentation, Id also like to congratulate
Andrew Anderson VK3CV and Noel Higgins VK3NH on that recent national
distance record on 241GHz that VK4EA just told us about.

Father's Day was recognised officially in Australia in 1958 and was
founded to celebrate the role of Fathers and thank them for their
hard work and dedication. Lets take a moment to remember Fathers,
father figures and role models that have impacted our lives.

Melbourne's new NATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS MUSEUM at Hawthorn will be
opening September 21. The site was previously the Victorian
Telecommunications Museum, which closed in 2019.

A South Australian-manufactured CubeSat named Kanyini has successfully
been launched into space.

Billed as the first state government-funded satellite in Australia,
Kanyini is part of a $6.5 million project to create hi-tech jobs in
South Australias space sector and develop vital space capabilities
in the state.

One of the research initiatives to be undertaken by Kanyini involves
early bushfire detection, utilising technology that can detect fires
from space 500 times faster than traditional processing.

Also data collected by Kanyini will be used to develop robust and
trustworthy AI capabilities that can accurately predict natural
disasters such as landslides and flooding, this as part of a project
by QUT, the Queensland University of Technology.

May 2024, ARRLs systems network was compromised by threat actors
(TAs) using information they had purchased on the dark web.

The TAs seemed to have a payload that would host and execute
encryption or deletion of network-based IT assets, as well as
launch demands for a ransom payment, for every system.

This serious incident was an act of organized crime.

The FBI categorized the attack as unique as they had not seen this
level of sophistication among the many other attacks, they have had
experience with.

The ransom demands by the TAs, in exchange for access to their
decryption tools, were exorbitant. It was clear they didnt know, and
didnt care, that they had attacked a small 501(c)(3) organization
( non-profit ) with limited resources. After days of tense negotiation
and brinkmanship, ARRL agreed to pay a $1 million ransom.

That payment, along with the cost of restoration, has been largely
covered by the ARRL insurance policy.

Yaesu, Icom & Kenwood Feature New Transceivers at Ham Fair Japan

The big three amateur radio transceiver manufacturers each featured
new transceivers at Ham Fair in Japan with Yaesu revealing the FTX-1F,
a portable radio designed to compete with the Icom IC-705.

Icom announced the IC-7760, a "Shack Style" transceiver with separate
base and dual display panel.

Kenwood revealed a yet to be named mobile rig capable of both APRS
and DSTAR.

The Yaesu FTX-1F is portable SDR transceiver covering HF to 430MHz
with 10W external power.

Icom IC-7760 is 200 W HF/50 MHz shack style" consisting of a full
control head with separate RF deck.

Kenwood's is a Mobile Radio with both APRS and DSTAR support.

The Terre Haute Childrens Museum in the USA hosted Radio Day
with the Wabash Valley Amateur Radio Association.

The event included a variety of educational activities for families
such as a scavenger hunt, morse code practice, a visit to "wave town,"
to explore the different types of radio waves, and even the chance
to operate a ham radio.

"Radio is everywhere in our lives," said Laurel Fincher, program
manager at Terre Haute Children's Museum. "I hope (attendees) gain a
deeper understanding of the technology in our everyday lives that you
dont even realize is there."

Research was unveiled at the Usenix Workshop on Offensive Technologies
by researchers from Northeastern University and UC San Diego.

In their paper, researchers note that, much like modern cars, todays
bicycles are cyber-physical systems that contain embedded computers
and wireless links to enable new types of telemetry and control.
One of the more common cyber-connected systems is the wireless gear
shifter, which uses electronic switches instead of traditional
control levers to allow bikers shift gears.

Researchers tested shifters sold by Shimano, a Japanese company that
is one of the larger cycling parts sellers in the world. unfortunately,
these shifters are vulnerable to simple replay attacks of the sort
that are frequently targeted at car fobs. Such attacks, which utilize
radio signal manipulation, allow attackers to capture and weaponise
data wirelessly exchanged by hardware parts. In this case, attackers
could use such an attack to unexpectedly shift gears or to jam its
shifters and lock the bike into the wrong gear.

Radio hardware necessary to carry out such an attack is relatively
inexpensive.

In professional races, attackers could exploit these weaknesses to
gain an unfair advantage, potentially causing crashes or injuries
by manipulating gear shifts or jamming the shifting operation.

ChatGPT developer OpenAI is supporting a California bill that would
require tech companies to label AI-generated content, which can range
from harmless memes to deepfakes aimed at spreading misinformation
about political candidates.

San Francisco-based OpenAI believes that for AI-generated content,
transparency and requirements around provenance such as watermarking
are important, especially in an election year, according to a letter
sent to California State Assembly member Buffy Wicks, who authored
the bill.

With countries representing a third of the world's population having
polls this year, experts are concerned about the role AI-generated
content will play, and it has already been prominent in some

NEW ZEALAND MAKES DEBUT IN HEMA AWARDS SCHEME

Competitors in the awards scheme known as HEMA are ready for a big
weekend this weekend. August 31 and the 1st of September marks the
official launch of the HEMA awards programme in New Zealand.

Hams there are making a special effort on this debut to fill their
logs and are hoping for some trans-Tasman H2H contacts with we
Australian radio amateurs.

HEMA stands for HuMPs Excluding Marilyns Award.

To the uninitiated that might seem like gobbledegook.

A HuMP is a summit that has Hundred Metre Prominence, meaning that it
sticks up above the surrounding land by at least 100m. A Marilyn is a
summit with 150m prominence. HEMA then is an award for HuMPs with a
prominence of less than 150m.

The HEMA scheme (via SOTA) currently operates in the UK, Ireland,
SOME parts of Europe and here in Australia.

Operators around the world wanting to earn HEMA awards should go to
the HEMA website at hema.org.uk

The website contains a full explanation of HEMA and how it works.
New Zealand hams will be able to upload their logs to
"on the air" - one word - dot nz.

If you have solar eclipse glasses or solar filters then
Ariana Garcia, writing in chron.com says sunspots are big enough
to see from Earth without a telescope right now - but be careful.

The Sun's surface is currently riddled with sunspot groups that could potentially erupt a few solar flares again this weekend. So much, in
fact, that you can see them from Earth without magnification, this
according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's
Space Weather Prediction Centre. All you need to do is make sure solar
filters and eclipse glasses are free of marks, scratches, and holes.

If they're still safe to use, you could wear them to watch the
sunspot groups grow, decay, and rotate into and out of view.

"The Sun rotates approximately 13 degrees a day -- so enjoy the wonder
that is our Sun and the progression of Solar Cycle 25," the SWPC said
in a statement.

An annular solar eclipse will occur on Oct. 2, 2024, when the moon's
central shadow will not quite reach Earth. The result will be a
'ring of fire' visible to those within a broad path across the
Pacific Ocean and southern South America. (Chile and Argentina).

At the point of greatest eclipse in the Pacific, the moon will cover
93% of the sun's centre, and that 'ring of fire' will be visible for
7 minutes.

During an annular solar eclipse, it is NEVER safe to look directly at
the sun without, as I mentioned in my previous story, solar eclipse
glasses designed for solar viewing.

On average, a central solar eclipse occurs in the same place twice
every 366 years or so, according to NASA, but two-and-a-half years
after this 2024 annular solar eclipse, another happens partly in the
same place. On Feb. 6, 2027, a 7-minute and 51-second 'ring of fire'
will again be visible again from Chile and Argentina.

Sonshine FM 98.5 in Western Australia has had a lengthy interview with
ARISS Ground Station in Mandurah run by Martin Diggins. Martin,
amateur radio station operator VK6MJ is one of only nine hams
worldwide who help connect Earth to the ISS through radio
transmissions.

Martin said The ISS has its own amateur radio station on board, and
the astronauts who pass their ham licenses can use it. With ARISS, we
connect schools to astronauts for a live chat that lasts about 10
minutes.

Martin is currently pursuing a PhD at Curtin University, focusing on
the ARISS program.

His research investigates the impact of live interactions with
astronauts on students interest in science, technology, engineering,
and math (STEM). The purpose of my research is to determine how well
the ARISS program enhances students interest in STEM subjects and
careers, Martin explained. Theres no doubt that the program is
achieving its goals. The excitement and engagement it generates are
undeniable.

The European Space Agencys Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) mission
is making headlines with its dual gravity assist manoeuvre.

After a successful flyby of the moon on August 19, Juice passed Earth
on August 20, marking the first-ever lunar-Earth double flyby.

This manoeuvre uses Earths gravity to adjust Juices trajectory,
setting it up for a flyby of Venus in August 2025 and ultimately
aiming for Jupiters orbit by July 2031.

The spacecrafts two cameras are capturing and sending images back to
Earth, while mission operators are closely monitoring the high-risk
manoeuvre to ensure precision. With Jupiter being nearly 500 million
miles away, this gravity assist strategy allows Juice to conserve fuel
and carry a variety of scientific instruments. The missions success
relies on careful navigation and timing, as any deviation could
jeopardize its ambitious goals.

The event marks the 118th anniversary of the adoption of both the
SOS signal and the maritime calling frequency of 500 kHz, 600 meters
in wavelength, medium wave.

Some amateurs around the world, lucky enough to be able to operate
just down the band from 600 meters throughout the evening, will be
using CW from 472 to 475khz and the WSJTX mode FST4 (60 second pass)

vintage MW transmitter back on the air, or perhaps try one of a number
of solid modern approaches. If you can't transmit, it still may be

through high school and college students.

Now orbiting our Earth is SR-0 Demosat, developed by Space Kidz India,
a 0.2kg CubeSat designed for educational and amateur radio purposes
SR-0 Demosat is equipped with an Inertial Measurement Unit and a LoRa digipeater. The satellites mission includes raising awareness about
amateur radio and nano satellites among students, transmitting health telemetry, and serving as a Digital Packet Store and Forward System

Operating on a 437.400 MHz downlink, the satellite supports various
digital communication modes allowing radio amateurs globally to engage

plug DEALS from commercial traders "on air", but we at the
WIA will put your supporters 'goods' in this text edition
"no worries."

We will not give blatant 'plugs' to raffles, be it raffles
at the event or "on-line".

instructions given in that mail to complete the

Once your unsubscription has been processed, you will
probably receive a message confirming your unsubscription
from the list and at that point you should stop receiving
