    News from the IRTS

    The IRTS Examination Board would like to remind those that have not yet
    registered for the next HAREC examination, that the examination will be
    held on the 16th of November 2024.

    The exam will take place in the Clayton Hotel Dublin Airport, Stockhole
    Lane, Clonshagh, County Dublin, K67 X3H5. Doors will open from 10.30
    a.m. for registration and the exam itself will commence at 11 a.m.
    sharp. The exam is two hours long and finishes at 1 p.m. The closing
    date for applications is Thursday the 7th of November. Due to a limited
    number of places, anyone wishing to sit the exam should forward their
    application along with the appropriate fee. The application form and
    the payment details can be found at www.irts.ie/exams

    EI News

    EI News is published on the first day of each month excluding March,
    June, September, and December when Echo Ireland is published. If you
    are an IRTS member and not on the society's mailing list, please
    contact the Treasurer/Membership Officer David Gardiner EI3IXB at
    irts_treasurer /at/ irts.ie if you wish to receive EI News.

    The deadline for the November EI news is Tuesday next, the 29th of
    October.

    Cork Radio Club

    Cork Radio Club has not had an in-person meeting since the advent of
    the Covid pandemic. Meetings were held regularly on the Zoom platform
    and attracted good attendances. In person meetings will resume on
    Monday next November 4th at 8 p.m. in the Community Centre, Main
    Street, Carrigtwohill, County Cork, Eircode T45 X3N1. It is important
    that previous members and intending members attend this meeting which
    will determine the future direction of Cork Radio Club.

    The current club officers and committee have all exceeded their time
    limit as officers and will have to be replaced at an upcoming Annual
    General Meeting. Enquiries are invited via email to info /at/

    VHF News

    Every Wednesday evening from 7.30 p.m., Damien EI7LF, Crevan EI3JWB,
    and Jim EI2HJB from the Dundalk Amateur Radio Society host a VHF/UHF
    net before reading the weekly northeast region IRTS news at 8 p.m. via
    the club's repeater network EI2CCR, EI2MOG, EI7DKD, and Echolink.
    Call-ins and SWL reports are more than welcome.

    The Hepburn Tropospheric Index forecast indicates a short-lived lift on
    Tuesday that will extend from the southeast of the country northwards
    toward Scotland. It will be followed by a period of strong tropospheric
    ducting that is forecast for Thursday next favouring that morning and
    early afternoon.

    Shannon Basin Radio Club SSB DX Nets

    Shannon Basin Radio Club's topband SSB DX net will recommence on
    Thursday night next, the 31st of October from 9 p.m. The nets will then
    alternate between topband and 80m each Thursday night after that date.
    All are very welcome to join in including SWLs. Further information may

    UKIECC 80m Contest

    The next UK and Ireland Contest Club (UKIECC) event in their 2024-2025
    series of 80m contests takes place next Wednesday the 30th of October
    2024 at 20:00 UTC using CW. The EI5G bonus station will be operated by

    Bushvalley Amateur Radio Club Annual Radio Rally

    The 2024 Bushvalley Amateur Radio Club Annual Radio Rally takes place
    next Sunday the 3rd of November at The Showgrounds, Rathmore Road, BT49
    0DF, Limavady. Doors open at 11 a.m. Further information may be found

    IARU Ham Challenge 2024 Deadline

    If you have a cool idea or project which you think is part of the
    future of amateur radio, then the International Amateur Radio Union
    Region 1 would like to hear from you. Licensed radio amateurs and
    non-licensees are invited to take part as individuals or as a team in
    the IARU Ham Challenge 2024. The deadline to submit your ideas is next
    Friday, the 1st of November 2024. You can find out more about this at

    SWL Contest 2025 Announced

    For SWLs interested in medium and shortwave broadcast DX, you may be
    interested to learn about a dedicated SWL contest taking place next
    year. The contest will start on the 1st of January 2025 and finish on
    the 28th of February 2025. The categories include the 522 to 1710 kHz
    medium wave band only, the 2.300 MHz to 26.100 MHz shortwave bands, or
    a combined medium and shortwave band category. You can use a real radio
    or a web-based software-defined receiver. Further information may be
    found via a web search for "SWL Contest 2025".
